New International Version (NIV)

1 In the days when the judges ruled,[a] there was a famine in the land. So a man from Bethlehem in Judah, together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while in the country of Moab. 2 The man’s name was Elimelek, his wife’s name was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there. 3 Now Elimelek, Naomi’s husband, died, and she was left with her two sons. 4 They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years, 5 both Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

I was not raised in a "Bible-Reading" home, so when my Aunt Mary took me to a movie called "The Story of Ruth", I was fascinated. The movie speculated about Ruth's childhood in Moab, and concocted a tale of her barely escaping being sacrificed to the Moabite Idol, Chemosh. Although this was probably pure "Hollywood", it did show the degradation of the idolatrous culture of Moab, and the horror of child sacrifice. Anyway, that scene stayed in my memory for many years, and when I got my first Bible, I went right to The Book of Ruth and read it through. Though it did not have the "Chemosh Scene", I was not disappointed! The story starts with Ruth becoming a young widow, and probably marginalized in her own land, as her late husband was a foreigner. So here we begin in our new Character Study...the Story of Ruth.

Ruth is the story of love. we all give and receive love in some form. It is better to give than receive. When we give love we are blessed, as is the recipient, = two people. which ideally is an effective example of passing it on to others.
