In both instances, we should observe, the idol was not set up as a rival to God, but under the pretense of being a help—a steppingstone to His service. But, in both instances, a great sin was committed.

Well, that certainly sounds familiar.....

One lineage is through Mary and one is through Joseph.

No contradiction there.

One lineage is through Mary and one is through Joseph.

Without whom our souls would be DOOMED!

Bernadine: …all gifts, all virtues, and all graces are dispensed by the hands of Mary to whomsoever, when, and as she pleases. O Lady, since thou art the dispenser of all graces, and since the grace of salvation can ONLY come through thy hands, OUR SALVATION DEPENDS ON THEE.

Bonaventure: …the gates of heaven will open to all who confide in the protection of Mary. Blessed are they who know thee, O Mother of God, for the knowledge of THEE is the high road to everlasting life, and the publication of thy virtues is the way of ETERNAL SALVATION . Give ear, O ye nations; and all you who desire heaven , serve, honor Mary, and certainly you will find ETERNAL LIFE.

Ephem: …devotion to the divine Mother…is the unlocking of the heavenly Jerusalem.

Blosius: To the, O Lady, are committed the KEYS and the treasures of the kingdom of Heaven.

Ambrose: …constantly pray ‘Open to us, O Mary, the gates of paradise, since thou hast its KEYS.

Fulgetius: …by Mary God descended from Heaven into the world, that by HER man might ascend from earth to Heaven.

Athanasius: …And, thou, O Lady, wast filled with grace, that thou mightiest be the way of our SALVATION and the means of ascent to the heavenly Kingdom.

Richard of Laurence: Mary, in fine, is the mistress of heaven; for there she commands as she wills, and ADMITS whom she wills.

Guerric: …he who serves Mary and for whom she intercedes, is as CERTAIN of heaven as if he were already there…and those who DO NOT serve Mary will NOT BE SAVED.

Anselm: It suffices, O Lady, that thou willest it, and our SALVATION is certain.

Antoninus: …souls protected by Mary, and on which she casts her eyes, are NECESSARILY JUSTIFIED AND SAVED.

Poor God. So depending on Mary’s approval and assent.

I wonder if He was up there biting His nails in agitation over whether she’d say yes or not.

And so starts another day of fussing with our Catholic brothers and sisters.

I’ll be distracted, due to a granddaughter who has stayed overnight to mess with my latest batch of kitties.

We’ll be going to TSC later today to get goat food and look at Easter chicks.

I’m sure there’ll be sweet talkin’ and eye battin’ going in Gramma’s direction.

Well, I’m relying on memory but God told Jeremiah that Jechonia (Jechonias) (Sometimes Coniah), spellings vary, that he (Jechonia) would never have a son to reign on the throne of Israel.

Jechonia was a descendent Of David, through his son Solomon, therefore, Jesus could not be directly descended from him. The genealogy given in Matthew is that of Jesus “step” father, Joseph.

The genealogy given in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus’ ancestry is traced back to David through David’s son Nathan, up to His mother Mary.

The earlier poster, who claimed that the two accounts were contradictory, was ignorant of the biblical prophecy of Jeremiah and thought that he had found a way to cast doubt on the inerrancy of the bible.

As is always the case, the bible is correct.

You probably could have said it better and probably looked up the relevant verse(s) in Jeremiah. I’m not too good at expressing things in writing. I’m sorry my brother that I had some doubts about your motivations in asking. But I knew without a doubt, that you knew the answer.

Jeremiah 22 King James Version (KJV)

1 Thus saith the Lord; Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak there this word,

And say, Hear the word of the Lord, O king of Judah, that sittest upon the throne of David, thou, and thy servants, and thy people that enter in by these gates:

Thus saith the Lord; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.

For if ye do this thing indeed, then shall there enter in by the gates of this house kings sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, he, and his servants, and his people.

But if ye will not hear these words, I swear by myself, saith the Lord, that this house shall become a desolation.

For thus saith the Lord unto the king's house of Judah; Thou art Gilead unto me, and the head of Lebanon: yet surely I will make thee a wilderness, and cities which are not inhabited.

And I will prepare destroyers against thee, every one with his weapons: and they shall cut down thy choice cedars, and cast them into the fire.

And many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbour, Wherefore hath the Lord done thus unto this great city?

Then they shall answer, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God, and worshipped other gods, and served them.

10 Weep ye not for the dead, neither bemoan him: but weep sore for him that goeth away: for he shall return no more, nor see his native country.

11 For thus saith the Lord touching Shallum the son of Josiah king of Judah, which reigned instead of Josiah his father, which went forth out of this place; He shall not return thither any more:

12 But he shall die in the place whither they have led him captive, and shall see this land no more.

13 Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; that useth his neighbour's service without wages, and giveth him not for his work;

14 That saith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and it is cieled with cedar, and painted with vermilion.

15 Shalt thou reign, because thou closest thyself in cedar? did not thy father eat and drink, and do judgment and justice, and then it was well with him?

16 He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well with him: was not this to know me? saith the Lord.

17 But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.

18 Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah; They shall not lament for him, saying, Ah my brother! or, Ah sister! they shall not lament for him, saying, Ah lord! or, Ah his glory!

19 He shall be buried with the burial of an ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

20 Go up to Lebanon, and cry; and lift up thy voice in Bashan, and cry from the passages: for all thy lovers are destroyed.

21 I spake unto thee in thy prosperity; but thou saidst, I will not hear. This hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice.

22 The wind shall eat up all thy pastors, and thy lovers shall go into captivity: surely then shalt thou be ashamed and confounded for all thy wickedness.

23 O inhabitant of Lebanon, that makest thy nest in the cedars, how gracious shalt thou be when pangs come upon thee, the pain as of a woman in travail!

24 As I live, saith the Lord, though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were the signet upon my right hand, yet would I pluck thee thence;

25 And I will give thee into the hand of them that seek thy life, and into the hand of them whose face thou fearest, even into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of the Chaldeans.

26 And I will cast thee out, and thy mother that bare thee, into another country, where ye were not born; and there shall ye die.

27 But to the land whereunto they desire to return, thither shall they not return.

28 Is this man Coniah a despised broken idol? is he a vessel wherein is no pleasure? wherefore are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not?

29 O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the Lord.

30 Thus saith the Lord, Write ye this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.

Although many folks do NOT like WIKI for various reasons; it DOES have the advantage that the CONTENT is allowed to be modified by all (mostly) and that constant reviewing of subjects tends to sift the chaff from the wheat.

I present the following with no recommendation or disclaimer; read it as you wish.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genealogy_of_Jesus

(Though I'm sure that the MORMONs will actually have the GENEOLOGY correct in their humongous database.)

I knew I’d mess it up a bit, that’s really why I didn’t post it to begin with. My point was to correct the atheist who thought he had found a contradiction. As always, the bible is right.

I read the bible two to four hours a day and have for years and still claim to know nothing but Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

At my age, I don’t retain stuff really well, I learn something “new” every time I read it. I’m not quite at the point, where I can hide my own Easter eggs but I’m getting there.

Another seeming contradiction, when taken out of context:

2 Samuel 14, v.27:

And unto Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair countenance.

And then we find in 2 Samuel 18, v.18 only 4 chapters later:

Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king's dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom's place.

If you weren't paying attention, you might have missed the answer in chapter 15 verse 7:

And it came to pass after forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the Lord, in Hebron.

A minimum of 40 years had passed between those 4 chapters, a lot of things can happen to ones sons in 40 years.

Not attempting to educate you Elsie. Posted for informational purposes, for those who may believe that the word of God has "contradictions". It does not.

Thanks for your very accurate and clear postings.

Once again the Scriptures show no matter how Satan tries (in a futile manner) to foil the Sovereignty of God, he loses every time.
