Tony Blair’s sister-in-law announced her conversion to Islam last weekend. Journalist Lauren Booth embraced the faith after what she describes as a ‘holy experience’ in Iran.
She is just one of a growing number of modern British career women to do so. Here, writer EVE AHMED, who was raised as a Muslim before rejecting the faith, explores the reasons why.
Much of my childhood was spent trying to escape Islam.
Born in London to an English mother and a Pakistani Muslim father, I was brought up to follow my father’s faith without question.
But, privately, I hated it. The minute I left home for university at the age of 18, I abandoned it altogether.
As far as I was concerned, being a Muslim meant hearing the word ‘No’ over and over again.
Girls from my background were barred from so many of the things my English friends took for granted. Indeed, it seemed to me that almost anything fun was haram, or forbidden, to girls like me.
There were so many random, petty rules. No whistling. No chewing of gum. No riding bikes. No watching Top Of The Pops. No wearing make-up or clothes which revealed the shape of the body.
No eating in the street or putting my hands in my pockets. No cutting my hair or painting my nails. No asking questions or answering back. No keeping dogs as pets, (they were unclean).
And, of course, no sitting next to men, shaking their hands or even making eye contact with them.
These ground rules were imposed by my father and I, therefore, assumed they must be an integral part of being a good Muslim.

No. They of full age who convert have heard the true Gospel, but they make the choice. Perhaps it is because they have never seen real men and real women who live the Gospel.
People who are converting to Islam are converting from something.
And at full age, they are converting from a religion or society that has failed to teach and support a woman's role in her relationship to God in Christ, but starts accepting women as priests and Lesbians as bishops and same-sex unions as Christian marriages.
(Which at least Islam does not accept any of this mindset.)
You’re almost there..The CoE today tells us that ALL religions are equal..so, why not try another one..you can’t lose..
I wouldn’t want to be within a mile of any spiritual or religious experience that would compel a Western woman to become soulless chattel. That said, good riddance. Let the Muslims weed out our defective women.
And its adherents, don't forget what sort of witness we often give... right here on the religion forum for instance...
Who would not discount what we have as useless if they looked in here and watched us going at it for a few days?
Didn't GK Chesterton say (I think) "Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and not tried." I believe that doesn't just apply to people on the outside looking in.
Why heck, send these babes over to Syria and Iraq. I am sure the ISIS could find some chores for them to do, like wash the dishes, do the laundry, take out the trash as well as a couple other things I can think of.
I wonder if that is happening here? It is always young women who convert, in Europe anyway. Once they grow up and become mature it seems to taper off but the twenty somethings are definitely in danger. And once you’re in, you’re in.

Something is that going through my mind right now is how the women in a family are usually the mainstay of religion. This is how Islam will get into American families, I’m afraid — through the women.
I respect your disagreement but I stand by my point.
Where would these British women have heard the Gospel? Where would they actually have been exposed to the Good News of salvation? At home? In school? On TV or the radio?
We Christians have stood by and allowed all mention of the living God and his son Jesus to be eliminated from public discourse, while the Muslims have done just the opposite. Publishers of textbooks have been intimidated into creating long chapters praising Islam while Christianity is only mentioned briefly in terms of the Crusades. We let our governments fall over themselves extending rights and privileges to Muslims while persecuting our faith in the name of “fairness” and “political correctness”.
The end result is that the lost sheep who we are tasked with leading to the Lord are instead turning to Islam. So our response is merely that they should have somehow known better?
