What was stopping them from going on Friday to perform this rather urgent task?

Matt 27:62 Now the next day [Passover the high Sabbeth], that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,

63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.

64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.

65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.

66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

OK, this is at least plausible, though not persuasive enough to get around the fact that the Gospels say that Jesus was crucified on Paraskeue, the sixth day of the week.

That said:

Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. (Matt. 28:1-4)

If Pilate granted the Jewish authorities the use of a guard until "the third day," then the guards should have packed up and left on Saturday night, yet apparently they were still there sometime before dawn.

If the Wednesday-crucifixion crowd is going to insist that three days means exactly three twenty-four-hour periods, then the same precision must apply in this case. You can't have your cake and eat it too. The best you can get from a Wednesday crucifixion is a Saturday resurrection.
