It's not the falling away. A little study of the ancient Greek helps.

646 apostasía (from 868 /aphístēmi, "leave, depart," which is derived from 575 /apó, "away from" and 2476 /histémi, "stand") – properly, departure (implying desertion); apostasy – literally, "a leaving, from a previous standing." [http://biblehub.com/greek/646.htm]

The departure of the ekklesi happens before that "man of sin" can be revealed.

That actually started happening during Paul’s life and is not the falling away talked about in the passage.
