LOS ANGELES – Much of the audience attending the Grammy Awards on Sunday donned light-up devil horns for the opening performance of the annual event—a presentation of the AC/DC hit “Highway to Hell.”

“Party time/My friends are gonna be there too/I’m on the highway to Hell,” the Australian rock band blared out as flames blazed on the jumbotron behind them, along with pyrotechnic effects. “Hey Satan/Payin’ my dues … I’m on the highway to Hell/Don’t stop me.”

The group had been introduced by rapper LL Cool J, as the audience stood to their feet. “To kick off the 52 second annual Grammy Awards, headed down the highway to Hell, for the first time at the Grammys,’ AC/DC!” he declared, being met with enthusiastic cheers.

Hell is not entertaining. “Weeping and gnashing of teeth” according to Scripture. (Luke 13:28) And evil isn’t cool or trendy, and it certainly isn’t an eternal party. (Luke 16:19-31)

That’s a rough crowd right there.

That crowd reminds me of the coven in Rosemary's Baby:

Their best music is all from the very early 80s or earlier. When everybody was listening to disco or whining about it, my little rural town drowned them out.

"whatsoever holy, whatsoever lovely, whatsoever of good fame, if there be any virtue, if any praise of discipline, think on these things."

Contrasted with,

"Hey satan, Payin' my dues, Playin' in a rockin' band, Hey mumma, Look at me, I'm on the way to the promised land, I'm on the highway to hell, Highway to hell, I'm on the highway to hell, Highway to hell, Don't stop me"

I've been an AC/DC fan since the late 70's...and I am not a devil worshiper. But they do say Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be...

They were best in the low tech 70s.

The song is a metaphor about the long road to musical success. This is not something to clutch your pearls over.

I’d be a lot more concerned about Stairway to Heaven than Highway to hell.

There were other Australia hard rock bands of the 70s that did break out to global release

The Saints

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0B95FjppEs

Radio Birdman

Both were going strong by 74. Some may call these bands punk but they get it from the Stooges/MC5, not the Brit thing and didn’t fit in with that marketing plan.

“Let There Be Rock” is my favorite album to listen to while I’m pounding out the miles on my elliptical.

Again, I refer you to my original post about “metaphors”. Consult a dictionary if you need to, but stop bugging me with your “satan behind bush” paranoia.

They just released another album. I won’t watch the Grammy. I wonder off their drummer was out on bail after soliciting a hitman a few weeks ago.
