Exactly. The Catholics know the Muslims only too well: Battle of Vienna, Lepanto, Charles Martel, the Crusaders. Their trouble-causing with the West started with Mo’ and it has pretty much continued ever since. I did not know that the Calvinists supported the Sultan??!!

Catholics in the US

In the mid-19th century, a rapid influx of immigrants from Europe (Irish, German, Polish and Italian) made Catholicism the United States' largest denomination. This increase of Catholics was met by widespread prejudice and hostility, often resulting in riots and the burning of churches, convents, and seminaries.[6] The Know Nothings, an anti-Catholic and nativist movement, was founded in the mid 19th century in an attempt to restrict Catholic immigration and was later followed, among others, by the APA, OUAM, JrOUAM, and the second Ku Klux Klan.

Anti-Catholicism was official government policy for the English who settled the colonies along the Atlantic seaboard.[41] Maryland was founded by a Catholic, Lord Baltimore as the first 'non-denominational' colony and was the first to accommodate Catholics. In 1650, the Puritans in the colony rebelled and repealed the Act of Toleration. Catholicism was outlawed and Catholic priests were hunted and exiled.

So who has made apologies to the Catholics, and to the people of those nationalities which comprised them?

Knock it off! If you find FR is not your cup of tea, you’re always free to post elsewhere.

Unlike the rcc, any problems catholics encountered were not directed by the church. The opposition to catholic immigrants was more political in nature.

No doubt much of this resentment was due to rome's treatment of non-catholics during Inquisition and the Protestant reformation.

And the treatment was justified by...? Retaliation? My, what kind forgiving Christian people. Were they the same that gave is the Salem Witch Hunts? More hatred toward Catholicism...

I love FR, as much as and for the same reasons as I love America. I have nothing but admiration and gratitude for FR. I would never disparage FreeRepublic.

"The opposition to catholic immigrants was more political in nature."

Absolutely true. I remember very well that, at the time, it was widely discussed that Kennedy, though an excellent candidate, would have a tough time winning the White House because he was Irish-Catholic.

I was only a kid, but I remember the discussions. I was growing up in a Catholic family that always registered "Independent," but leaned Democrat until my 20's.

FWIW
