Pope on Charlie Hebdo: There are limits to freedom of expression when faith is insulted
Fox News ^ | January 15, 2015 | AP

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE – Pope Francis said Thursday there are limits to freedom of expression, especially when it insults or ridicules someone's faith.[...]

"If my good friend Dr. Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch," Francis said, throwing a pretend punch his way. "It's normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others."[...]

"There are so many people who speak badly about religions or other religions, who make fun of them, who make a game out of the religions of others," he said. "They are provocateurs. And what happens to them is what would happen to Dr. Gasparri if he says a curse word against my mother. There is a limit."

So is it OK to kill in the name of religion and is it OK to provoke someone to violence over religion? Because if you read the article at EWTN or National Catholic Register that was the point he made.

I don't find it outrageous that a Christian religious leader would ask us to not turn the other cheek exactly, but to maybe temper our rhetoric. A person may have the right to say something, that does not mean it's always prudent to do so.

That’s not a message for a Pope, he is supposed to be bringing people to Christ.

That is for the faithful, there was no expectation that people outside the faith would comply.

Hey Pope, what would Jesus do? Not what you said. The Pope’s thinking on free speech and climate change is so screwed up that nothing he says can be taken seriously. Pope Francis serves as a stark reminder that a pope is a mere mortal. Nothing more. And, in his case, a deeply flawed mortal at that.

Wow, bad enough we’ve been saddled with the worst POTUS in American history; now we have the worst Pope who pontificates constantly on the side of the left.

Freakin’ islam can’t be insulted but Christians are insulted and abused daily.
Told they can’t have their Bibles, etc.

This guy has sold God out if you ask me.

“Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. FOR WE OURSELVES were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior...”—Titus 3

To whom it may concern. This touched a sensitive spot in me recently, you know...when God shows you His Way and it tenderly blows YOUR way to smithereens? Pride immediately begins rebuilding, lol, but new and (hopefully) lasting “damage” was done to my angry fortress.

Believers are a peculiar people. Our love is Truth, and we can confront the world in the power of the Spirit while knowing that we, too, were as blind as those we lovingly confront. Jesus endured the opposition of sinful men and that is our heritage.

“The Pope is right about one thing. When you directly insult a closely held emotional belief, you should be prepared for just about any kind of response, legal or illegal, from that individual. You are free to insult of course and take your chances. It is also clear that you can insult some with impunity, others not so much.”

Thanks for that common sense. I think what Pope Francis is saying is the same thing that Bill Donohue said last week. When you begin to insult a person’s religious beliefs, you are playing with fire.

Christians are adult enough to be insulted and angry, but would not go into such a rage as to commit terrorism. Islamists are not disciplined about their anger. They act
out. It is not excusable in any way - and I doubt that Pope Francis was trying to indicate that it was excusable.

Unbelievable! There goes Western civilization. We are digging our own graves. I can’t wait to see Sharia law courts in the US. It’s going to happen in my lifetime for sure.

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Just a few words about how to respond to insults about religion.

From the One Who knows.

It would be more helpful if Pope Francis sought to impose a limit on his own self-expression.
