Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away

8 The child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast. 9 But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking, 10 and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”

11 The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son. 12 But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned. 13 I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring.” .

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

In order to look at Isaac, we need to back up a little in our reading and re-examine the conditions surrounding his birth.

He was the long-awaited "Son of the Promise" whose conception and birth was the cause of great mirth and humor, considering the age of his parents! However, Abraham's first-born, Ishmael was a young adolescent when this "Miracle baby" was born, and one can only imagine his resentment. It has long been speculated as to what form this "Mocking" actually took, and some scholars think it was more than just verbal abuse.

In any case, Hagar and Ishmael were cast out, after living with Abraham and Sarah for over twelve years. The Son of the Promise, Isaac, had to be protected at all costs.

We will see the incredible bond that grows between Isaac and his parents as we study his character in the days to come.

And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
