I have an accurate, revealing test for self-righteousness.

This would seem to be the greatest sin, or close to it, based on Jesus’ words........

Does anyone here want to take it?

Another one is Jesus’s strict prohibition of divorce and remarriage, except (in some versions) under very narrow circumstances. The Protestant “scripture only” people are very eager to dismiss or ignore that tough teaching.

Most of the “scripture only” people I know take a very dim view of divorce. It is the protestant church who have abandoned the scripture that are OK with divorce.

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

..........

Catholics disagree with Jesus on this

I agree with your post 20 and love your tagline. I will have to look at this in more detail later.

"lol and Catholics never divorce and remarry in your world."

I didn't say that. I said that Protestants ignore it. Catholics have to go through a laborious annulment process to get around that precept, and not every annulment request is granted. But Protestants just disregard it.

Not the Catholicism I was taught fifty years ago.

Maybe that argument did not come from Jesus, therefore their disagreement is with someone else.

Catholics use annulment to pretend something never happened, which means they are lying to themelves

Ok, and Protestants just disregard the clear teaching of Jesus without any sense of compunction. We are in agreement.

Whatever rationale Protestants use to disregard Jesus's teaching on divorce - and maybe you can tell me what that rationale is - is just as "phony" as the Catholic annulment process.

If you only had the Gospel of John would you be condemned? That Gospel only emphasizes belief that Jesus is our salvation. No works needed, only belief.

If we truly have Jesus and believe in him. We will desire to be more like him. When we are more like him, we will want to do works in his name. It will never make us tolerant of sin but loving of sinners that we wish would do better. We will still say “now go and sin no more.”

I am sorry but this sounds like an attempt to convince me to be more accepting of sinful lifestyles. I reject that and so should you.

When Jesus is alive and real to you, and you have surrendered your will then you are in the right spot.

“Protestants” is lumping a bunch of people together who have little to nothing in common, building those strawmen to knock over must be fun.

I am still wondering what Jesus said to encourage the use of prayer beads, praying to statues, praying to Saints and making some kind of Goddess from Mary.

Catholics have disregarded Jesus teachings on everything.

You are avoiding the question. My saying that Protestants accept divorce and remarriage for many reasons other than adultery is not creating a "straw man" - it is stating a FACT. By raising the issue of Mary and saints you are just avoiding the issue. I am NOT arguing from the point of view of a practicing Catholic; I am arguing from scripture, and YOU HAVE NO SCRIPTURAL RESPONSE, only Catholic-bashing.

4. The ultimate love for our neighbors is not to let them live in their sin, but to point them to Jesus. We have to confront sin.

I fully agree with the rest of what you said but I believe to love your neighbor is to treat them like you would like to be treated in the same situation

If they are hungry take them some beans.
If they are in need of help do what you can.

James 2
5 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,

16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?

Let them see your faith by your works.

“The doctrine of sola fide (faith alone) was developed by the Reformers in response to the Roman Catholic Churches corrupted teachings that emerged in the 16th Century teaching that one could gain favor with God and shave off years in Hell and Purgatory by giving money to the church or doing acts of penance.”

Perhaps the author should ‘get it right’ before he uses examples such as this. It’s not a teaching of the Church that you can buy yourself out of hell. Once your in hell, you’re there forever. The selling of indulgences was wrong. The doctrine of indulgences is perfectly sound.

I don’t accept divorce and remarriage for any reason outside of adultery or murder or something. Lots of “protestants” do not accept it.
