And, really how apposite! The young girl of a backwater of a province, so utterly opposite to both the Mediterranean Hera and Aphrodite. No cosmic majesty, no erotic power, hardly any intrinsic power at all! Just the divine gift to say the “Yes,” that we often struggle to say. And so again, the weak are set over the strong, the lowly are lifted up, and Astarte and her demons are cast down from their seats and their false honors.
I agree that Satan tries to pervert everything that God does that is good and is why ancient religions all seemed to have similar stories to that of the truth of the one, true God, taking on human flesh and living among man. I imagine the devil's intention was to dilute the reality so much that people would not be able to tell the difference. But, what he didn't bargain for was the light of truth shining in the hearts of those who diligently sought to know it. God would, and still does, open eyes and hearts to filter through the false constructs thrown up by deceivers to know the truth when they hear it. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.
