Karl's father came from a rabbinical line. Although he converted to Lutheranism for business reasons, he remained secular.
Karl's mother, Henrietta Pressburg, was Jewish and did NOT convert, so Israel's "Law of Return" would have considered Karl to be Jewish, despite Karl being secular.
His mother’s conversion would be irrelevant. Her children are Jewish if she is, born or converted, even if she became a Christian (again).
