um.. since when do life insurance policies pay out if you kill yourself?

Many do. There are caveats like “If you commit suicide within (2, 5, 10) years,no payout.”

There’s generally an incontestability clause that kicks in (usually after two years). So the insurance company is protected where someone is buying a policy in contemplation of suicide, but otherwise will have to pay out.
