“No, he is speaking to a future event, when the Sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give her light, when the mountains and hills will tremble.”

By referencing the past event:

From the Amplified Bible:

[In a vision Jeremiah sees Judah laid waste by conquest and captivity.] I looked at the land, and behold, it was [as at the time of creation] waste and vacant (void); and at the heavens, and they had no light.

“I think you may find more information in studying the words tohu and bohu in Hebrew.”

From Strongs, to’-hoo and bo’-hoo defined, used in both Genesis 1:2 and Jeremiah 4:23:

to’-hoo
From an unused root meaning to lie waste; a desolation (of surface), that is, desert; figuratively a worthless thing; adverbially in vain: - confusion, empty place, without form, nothing, (thing of) nought, vain, vanity, waste, wilderness.

bo’-hoo
From an unused root (meaning to be empty); a vacuity, that is, (superficially) an undistinguishable ruin: - emptiness, void.

“I find ‘gap theory’ to be a tired extrapolation with very little evidence, whose sole purpose is to shoehorn evolution into Christianity.”

If there’s any gap theorists pushing evolution then they’re not reading the bible correctly either, although I have yet to see many promoting evolution theory. Most do not. Evidence you say? What I find tiring are buffoons who deny scientific evidence that the earth is older than 6,000 years old, and believe that man walked along side dinosaurs. Read the Bible correctly and you will see that it matches that evidence.

There is no basis in the text for believing Jeremiah is looking backward to Genesis in order to assign a direct historical analogy of fall from order, as the Gap Theory requires. Tohu wa vohu simply refers to a state of chaos, disorder, and works well in both contexts independently, not because of the historical analogy, but because of the linguistic power of the metaphor for chaos.

In Jeremiah’s case, the chaos is derived from the events to come, even though the past tense is used. This is a common Hebraism, the prophetic past tense being an assertion of the certainty of the future event, not an actual looking back to the past. Compare many, many messianic prophecies, esp. Isaiah 53, “He was wounded for our transgressions,” past tense, yet speaking of an event long in the future.

In Genesis, the chaos is a state of creation prior to new levels of order being created, and has no necessary reference to any prior state of order subsequently lost. Such ideas may entertain the imagination, but they cannot be built on the “chaotic” foundation of “tohu wa vohu.”

Peace,

SR

By referencing the past event:

Such a small hill to hang so little evidence upon. The very same description is found for the Day of the Lord.

From Strongs, to’-hoo and bo’-hoo defined, used in both Genesis 1:2 and Jeremiah 4:23:

I said to study the words in Hebrew - I don't need a definition... And the words are used elsewhere as well.

If there’s any gap theorists pushing evolution then they’re not reading the bible correctly either, although I have yet to see many promoting evolution theory. Most do not.

To the contrary, certainly they do - The moment one cedes the Creation as THE creation event, one substantially cedes the authority of the Bible, and particularly the Torah to science (whose progenitor was alchemy, sorcery, and wizardry). Moreover, to so quickly cause the very beginning to submit to allegory bodes ill toward the rest, and particularly to the Prophecy as I had mentioned before - And in doing so subverts the very proof of YHWH.

Evidence you say?

Indeed, I do - Moreover, evidence without errata. For as I have said before, it is the errata that I lean upon, more than the evidences themselves... One artfully made silver vase found in a lump of coal speaks more eloquently and with more authority than all the reams of evidences proffered - Certainly the evidences... yet the vase is there, even so. Ergo, the evidences necessarily must be re-examined to account for that vase (but it never is... Onward they go, with the vase swept under the rug - a mere anomaly). But to me, until that vase is accounted for, the interpretation of the evidences is necessarily and plainly in error.

What I find tiring are buffoons who deny scientific evidence that the earth is older than 6,000 years old, and believe that man walked along side dinosaurs.

The typical sophistry of science, deigning to assign our ancestors a low intelligence, ignoring their testimony entirely, not because of evidence, but rather because it doesn't fit the paradigm. Rather, their testimony stands against the paradigm and requires an accounting.

Read the Bible correctly and you will see that it matches that evidence.

That would be called eisegesis.
