Burke is a canon violating heretic and the subject of numerous complaints from Orthodox patriarchs on down and has been for years. I don’t doubt that you Latins are happy to disregard the canons of the early Church but I am surprised that you will go to mattresses for a hierarch whose was notorious for hiding child molesting pederast priests, quite aside from his reputation as a diocesan tyrant, a man willing to intrude himself in violation of the canons on a regular basis into the affairs of other dioceses. Why do you think he was removed from St. Louis and sent to Rome a la Bernie Law? You’ll rip the Latin Church apart for such a creature?

K, I am surprised at you on your tone. You are generally respectful even when you disagree. As for disregarding the canons of the early Church, with all due respect the Orthodox are in no shape to criticize when they disregard the ipissima verba of our Lord himself concerning divorce and remarriage.

A lot of bishops complained about Athanasius too. So what?

The idea that Burke has interfered in other dioceses simply because he doesn’t conceal his opinions, is just silly. He has not pretended to authority he doesn’t possess; he has only spoken his mind.

Burke was removed from St Louis for the same reason Athanasius and John Chrysostom were removed. He commits truth, and can’t seem to break the habit. Not everyone is truth-tolerant. It’s a spiritual problem.

The Sacraments all are interwoven, Kolo. You can’t tamper with one without corrupting them all. If I can get a second marriage because things stink, then so can Jesus. By those standards, he deserves it far more than I. You really want to go there?

You usually show more good sense than this.

The Russian Orthodox Church is becoming increasingly involved in the culture wars. Hardly a day goes by without me hearing a statement from one or more members of their hierarchy about matters outside their dioceses. +Kirill, +Hilarion and +Vesevelod are constantly decrying Western decadence, including the issue of homosexual "marriage" and propaganda. +Hilarion, in particular, has been touring America, lecturing on matters ecclesiastical and cultural and warning of the dangers of following the theology adopted by mainline Protestant denominations, such as the Episcopal Church. He certainly doesn't seem too concerned that he's breaking any canons. I'll ping you the next time I post a thread on the subject. He sounds remarkably like Burke, in many respects.

Strangely, I never hear a peep from the Greeks.

Are they sulking because the Moscow Patriarchate is getting all the press or have they simply retreated into their ghetto and pulled down the shutters on what's happening in Sodom and Gomorrah?

Kolokotonis, have you ever met Cardinal Burke? I have and I can tell you that he is very kind, a true gentleman, and is very straightforward. I can’t help but think that you have him confused with someone else, but if you are sincere in your criticism, please tell us all which Canons he violated which make him a “heretic.” I’m sure we would all like to know. And please refer to these Canons by their name and/or number, so that we may be better informed.
