Mormon Church Finally Admits Founder Joseph Smith Was Polygamist With 40 wives Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints admits its founder was a polygamist, having long glossed over his marital history

Emma Hale Smith was the first of 33 wives of Mormon founder Joseph Smith Philip Sherwell 11 Nov 2014

The Mormon founder Joseph Smith married as many as 40 women, including a 14-year-old girl, church leaders have acknowledged for the first time in a surprising revelation about their most important prophet.

Although the Mormon church was closely associated with polygamy during its first decades, its teachings had long focussed on Smith as happily married to his wife Emma.

The reality was apparently very different from that monogamous picture. And with increasing speculation circulating on the internet about his marital history, the Church hierarchy has revealed Smith as a prolific polygamist via an essay posted on its website.

The disclosure shocked many Mormons raised on stories of the life of Smith, the young farmworker and treasure hunter who in the late 1820s discovered inscribed golden plates, the Book of Mormon, buried in upstate New York. Smith’s wife count, the essay notes that “careful estimates put the number between 30 and 40”. Some of these women were already married to others, while one wife was just short of her 15th birthday. The Church also notes that Smith’s multiple marriages caused great pain to his first wife Emma.

I wonder if he could recite all their names without a cheat sheet?

Sounds like a contemporary version of the Mohammed syndrome.

I think there is mental illness in play with these two.

Oh come on, what’s the big deal - Mr Smith was just ahead of his time. Just give it a few years, and the US will be allowing you to marry as many barnyard animals as you want.

A short drive around the southern edge of Sandy, Utah will convince you that its alive and well and has been all along.

Houses with 10 car parking lots and multiple upstairs windows are rather obvious evidence of what everyone already knows...
