As LifeNews previously reported, pro-abortion Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid lost his position when pro-life candidates took over the U.S. Senate. This is very good for the pro-life movement because Reid has repeatedly supported pro-abortion President Barack Obama. Hes also refused to allow pro-life bills to come to a vote in the Senate.
In 2013, after the passage of the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R 1797) through the U.S House of Representatives, Reid said that we shouldnt focus on fringe issues like late abortion. However, he failed to realize it is those who support late abortion that are on the most radical fringe of the pro-abortion movement.
harryreid4Now, Reids receiving criticism from leaders in his own religious tradition. Mark Peredes, a Mormon bishop, wrote in his blog, Good Riddance to Harry Reid, the Mormon Senate Leader, that his support of abortion rights runs contrary to church positions and are an embarrassment.
He elaborated, Of all of yesterdays election results, the one that made me dance a jig was the ousting of Harry Reid as Senate Majority Leader. The Senates most powerful perch will no longer be occupied by a man who does not take his religion seriously.
He concluded, I have no doubt that Harry Reid is a wonderful man who loves his wife and kids, attends church, and is kind to animals. However, he is not a man of serious religious faith. He also asserted that Reid isnt worthy to enter Mormon temples. Although the Mormon faith is largely pro-life and supports pro-life candidates, a spokesperson from the Church, Dale Jones, said his comments were inappropriate:
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are, of course, entitled to express their own political opinions. However, publishing such views while using a title of a church officer, even if only as a leader of a local congregation as in this case, is entirely inappropriate.
The problem with this statement is that ones position on abortion is not solely a political opinion; rather it reveals how a person values human life. And since many world religions hold human life, and the killing of it, very seriously, it isnt totally surprising that Peredes voiced his disapproval.
According to the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints website, their faith officially opposes abortion, except in rare cases:
The Church opposes abortion and counsels its members not to submit to or perform an abortion except in the rare cases where, in the opinion of competent medical counsel, the life or good health of the mother is seriously endangered or where the pregnancy was caused by rape and produces serious emotional trauma in the mother. Even then it should be done only after counseling with the local presiding priesthood authority and after receiving divine confirmation through prayer.
I’m glad at least SOME church out there is willing to call their politicians out over this.
Sure as heck ain’t mine.
If the Mormons aren’t voting for him, who is? SEIU doesn’t have enough legal members to elect a senator.
There are about a million reasons why Reid is not a man of serious faith.
His church disagrees with the author. Reid is a member in good standing, holding a temple recommend (only about 5% of LDS hold one), full tithe payer, has ‘callings’ (church jobs), and is well liked and well connected with the leadership in SLC (BTW, their current prophet is/was a registered Democrat).
Also Mormon teaching (Handbook of instructions) is that Abortion is permissible as long as approached by prayer.
Mormons are voting for him. They vote Mormon first, party next.
Whorehouse Harry is not even a creditable man.
BTW, a Mormon ‘bishop’ is the equivelent of a local priest or pastor. This man holds no standing at all. If one of the 12 apostles or First presidency (Top LDS leaders) said it, it would be newsworthy.
This guy doesn’t know what he is talking about, and is rightfully being criticized by Mormons for speaking against a very devout Mormon, and misleading people on his religion’s beliefs in regards to abortion.
Bishop and later Stake President (the office over the Bishops) Romney was proabortion as he was in those offices and excommunicating people and was pro-abortion as he ran for president.
August 2012-—CBSNews.com. The transcript is below.
PELLEY: Well, the platform as written at this convention for the Republicans does not allow for exceptions on abortion with regard to the health of the mother or rape or incest. Is that where you are?
ROMNEY: No. My position has been clear throughout this campaign. Im in favor of abortion being legal in the case of rape and incest, and the health and life of the mother.
Harry Reid is not only a Mormon, but an exceptional Mormon, and carries church issued ID proving it, ID which requires passing examination every 2 years to attain it.
a) The Mormon church has no right-to-life position per se, having no declaration as to when life begins. What it has are statements from its leaders denouncing abortion as a practice, but telling members to "receive a confirmation through prayer before proceeding" with an abortion.
b) Who wants to bet that Reid still gets a valid Temple Recommend from his own bishop?
But he is a devout and true Mormon.
That is absolutely false, Reid goes through an examination on his faith and adherence to church doctrine, and he is issued special ID proving that faith, and making him a member of the most holy Mormons and allowing him into the sacred temples, and as a participant in the secret ceremonies and practices forbidden to Mormons of lesser faith.
//Who wants to bet that Reid still gets a valid Temple Recommend from his own bishop?//
He does. I know someone who used to be in his ward in DC. Said he was a ‘model member with a strong testimony’
Pretty bad when a non-religious cult tells you he’s not a “man of faith.”
Reid will never make it to Kolob without their endorsement.
“BTW, a Mormon bishop is the equivelent....”
What ever his rank is or is not at least he had the decency to stick up for life. Something Prince Harry has not done in a long while.
//Something Prince Harry has not done in a long while.//
And something a lot of Mormons don’t do. I know a lot of LDS who are pro-abortion and ‘temple worthy’. Just saying this nobody claiming Reid is not a ‘good Mormon’ a) isn’t true and b) holds now water or authority.
Those two missionaries I met one time told me Mormons are suppose to be pro life. Shows you how much I know. I know a lot of people say they are one thing and do another.
Nevada is about 8 percent Mormon. And Lds tend to be more likely to be registered than the avg Mormon voter...turnout not sure...but Nevada Lds Republicans turned out enmasse to vote for Romney.
