It doesn’t matter what they believe - it is WHY they believe it.
Even a “moral atheist” has been brought up in a society saturated with Judeo-Christian ethics - build right into the fabric of the society over centuries. They don’t even realize it but take it for granted - it molds who they are.
If they’d grown up in Yemen their ideals about what is “right vs. wrong” would be very different...they don’t understand this. People are highly flexible things, we don’t really understand our nature very well.
If what the British see of religion is primarily Islam, then it’s hard to blame them for believing that religion does more harm than good. Unfortunately the traditional, deeply-ingrained British reserve and dedication to privacy makes Christian/Catholic evangelism difficult. That is, ordinary British people who are Christian rarely talk about it, because talking about anything so private is far outside of cultural norms among middle-class people and above. Those who really are believers are reticent about it, usually. Thus, Britons who have no belief system encounter faith either as murdering Muslims or sanctimonious and pointless C of E blitherings.
