VATICAN CITY (AP) -- A fight for the soul of the Catholic Church has broken out, and the first battlefield is a document on family values that pits increasingly alarmed conservatives against more progressive bishops emboldened by Pope Francis' vision of a church that is more merciful than moralistic.

I know and I don't trust them. I don't trust many sources that report on Catholic anything. This whole thing has taken on a life way out of proportion to what it actually represents.

I believe when Benedict became Pope it was predicted by the mainstream media that is was a dark day and the Church would turn back to the dark ages.

Sadly, there is not many good Catholic news services out there and I got this article via Spiritdaily.com, a very good Catholic website.

The concern I do have is that the Church is trying not to be moralistic out of FEAR of being attack by the lefties.

EWTN and National Catholic Register are more trustworthy sources. I see no panic there. I get worried when they get worried. I really am not trying to pick on you personally, please don't take it that way.

Speaking as a Protestant, I hope some of the motivation that prompted the Reformation will be welcomed by these conservative Roman Catholics.

I don't expect them to come around to Presbyterianism (smile) but hopefully they'll see the need to be more true to Scripture and not the "authority" of a synod, council or pope.

I respect these men, and hope they can prevail in their struggle to speak truth.

So Catholics are to be "more true to Scripture" by maintaining what the Church has authoritatively taught throughout the ages. Meanwhile, see how the doctrine of "sola scriptura" has failed to prevent the majority of Protestant churches from abandoning Biblical morality.

Typical agenda laden article by the AP.

Are there some bad clerics in the Church? Yes.

Will the Moral Teaching of the Church change? No.

Gay overtures in the Church usually end with prison terms for those who make them.

This is all anyone needs to know about the Synod and what will eventually come out of it and none of it is good. Francis has shown his colors. Liberal Catholics and church haters have a reason to rejoice. I personally think it’s time for a coup (if that’s possible), and replace him with a Catholic. He belongs in the Anglican Church, where they’ll welcome his liberal theology.

“The bishops themselves elected a host of known conservatives to lead the working groups hammering out details of the final report. In an apparent bid to counter their influence, Francis appointed six progressives to draft the final document”.

So out with Cardinal Burke, the great defender of the faith, and in with the flaming Donna Wuerl, the great heretic who spits in the face of the the Church by giving communion to notorious pro-abort politicians.

Heard that Pope Francis more likely will step down in the next 2 to 3 years himself.

How is encouraging homosexual activity merciful? It’s deadly. If I hated someone, I would encourage him to play around in the butts of other men. Last I saw, the average lifespan of a queer male was 46. How merciful to condone that behavior!
