I heard a very wise Bible college teacher once talk about the problem addiction to porn is among incoming male Christian students.

He contended that the root of the problem is hurt and pain in their lives. You feel good when you engage in addictive behavior because for a while, you have no pain, it makes you forget and feel better.

He said that all addictive behavior is an attempt to numb emotional pain somewhere in their life and when the person deals with those issues.

I have found in my own life that there are what I call *symptom sins* and *root sins*.

For example, I for most of my life, struggled with worry. Now I know that it's a sin and so I would worry, repent, worry, repent, on an endless treadmill of worry, repent, that never got anywhere. I just could never get victory over it.

That is, until God showed me that worry was because I was not trusting HIM.

When I repented of THAT, the problem I had with worry about vanished completely.

Sometimes I do catch myself falling back towards it, but it no longer controls my life like it used to.

So if men want to have victory over something like porn, they need to find out why they started with it in the first place and deal with those issues.

A problem with our society is that it doesn't recognize the possibility of males' having hurt and pain in their lives: the pain of broken families, for example. Our society operates on the assumption that men have only appetites, and that all issues will resolve themselves if the appetites are sufficiently fed.
