In Isaiah 11:1 it says, "Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit." In Hebrew, the word for "branch" is netzer, "NZR" which letters are included in NaZaReth.
Even the Catholic Church says that. Not sure why Catholics keep asking that question as if it's some kind of gotcha.
If one says in the original that he would be called a n-tz-r, the context would indicate a branch as in a family tree. To interpret n-tz-r as meaning a place requires an understanding outside of the text itself - a tradition.
Problem is, the text of the New Testament itself makes the connection in Romans, and I think in Revelation.
Because they think it works.
