From the comments section:
“In his first Mass as our new Pastor in Omaha, Father Cupich publicly chastised our teenage daughter for genuflecting,as was her practice, along with many others in our parish, before receiving the Blessed Sacrament. He said loudly so that all in the communion line could hear: dont do that in my church again. We pray that he has reflected on John 12:3 since that time and for those he is called to serve in Chicago.”
“It is bittersweet to see Bishop Cupich appointed to Chicago. Bitter because he sees it as a promotion, when his priests and laity have suffered so much under his leadership. Sweet, because we can all breathe a little easier now, knowing that Our good Lord has come to rescue us from this wolf in sheeps clothing. Without going into to too much detail, I will say that our holy priests are most likely VERY relieved. (Many of them have admitted in confidence, to many of us lay Catholics that B. Cupich terrifies them. Bishop Cupich has ruled over them with an iron fist, and this is not a secret, my friends (And his mandate to avoid praying in front of PP is only one of many of those examples.) strike the shepherd, and the sheep will scatter. We have been in the desert over here in Spokane since he was installed September 3rd, 2010. God has finally delivered us from his hands, though. Ill be praying for you Chicago- you are gonna need it!! Oh, and one piece of advice for any of you who ever happen to go to him for confession: ask him to turn off his phone BEFORE the sacrament begins. He is on his phone CONSTANTLY,(which is not news to Spokanites), but I was STUNNED to hear text beeps occurring while he was listening to my confession. To this day, I regret not asking him why he would leave his phone on during this holy sacrament.”

Don’t know if I believe that. I’ve met Cupich, been to Mass many times at the Cathedral. He usually only talks during the homily and does not give long homilies. I see some people holding hands during the Our Father, some people bowing before communion, some not. Not saying the lady is wrong, just saying that is not the Bishop Cupich I’m familiar with. He’s rather friendly.
The problem with an accusation of Modernism is that Modernism is DESIGNED to be subtle. I have no doubt that Francis is a Modernist, but “manifest” heresy would have to be something like Arianism, or denial of the Real Presence—something along those lines. And to be “manifest,” the heresy would have to appear in some kind of document. To have heretical opinions, which I think Francis does, is not the same as being a “heretic.” A heretic is contumacious. A heretic campaigns against the Church.
Charles Curran and the other dissenters against Humanae Vitae were heretics. Richard McBrien is a heretic.
Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying Francis is a good Pope. I’m saying he hasn’t done anything that FORCES honest people to admit that he’s not Pope.
If the Synod comes out for Communion for adulterers, and Francis ratifies that conclusion, THEN he would be a manifest heretic.
When I said “Rube,” I meant theologically. Compared with JPII and Benedict, he’s an inch deep.
That doesn’t preclude being a political manipulator and operator. His now-consistent record of snuggling with the worst bishops and punishing the best has been very revealing.
Catholics who want “more social justice and less dogma” are Catholics who want to abort, contracept, and vote Democrat. They like bishops (O’Malley, Dolan, Wuerl) who tell them that that’s Catholicism.
This appointment shows that the worst American bishops have the ear of the Pope. He has been a friend of O'Malley for many years. His elevation of Wuerl is well known. Dolan is still in New York, despite his commitment to serve as Grand Marshal of a Gay Pride Parade next March 17th.
We just plain have a crummy Pope. The worst American bishops are having a field day.
So, since Modernism is subtle one can never call a Modernist a manifest heretic? A person who follows the synthesis of all heresies can never be called a heretic? Seriously?
A manifest heretic is a public heretic. It does not require the heresy to be in a written document.
That’s precisely the brilliance of Modernism. They observed the mistakes of previous heretics (being too honest) and devised a way to undermine Christianity without losing the prestige they wanted to have as bishops, priest, and theologians.
It’s an unjust world.
No. I didn’t say that a Modernist can never be called a heretic. I was saying that a Pope will never be deposed for being a Modernist. The reason is that the only people in a position to do such a thing are the Cardinals, and they are the problem.
Well, this wasn't what you were saying, but you are saying it now. Perhaps you meant to say that. OK.
You yourself have said that you have no doubt that Francis is a Modernist. That is because he has made it manifestly known. Francis is a manifest Modernist. A modernist is a heretic. Hence, he is a manifest heretic.
According to St Robert Bellarmine and other saints and theologians, a manifest heretic automatically ceases being pope. This happens without a formal "deposition" by the Cardinals.
I find it very interesting that Francis ignored the 100th anniversary of the death of St. Pius X. He did make a point of praising Paul VI on the 36th anniversary of his death. Coincidence? Of course not.
In the end, weak leadership costs the Church members (and not just the disenchanted liberals). Many conservatives are at a point where their involvement with the Church ends at receiving the sacraments.
I personally am disgusted (on a local level) by a parish that still runs Bingo years after the school closed (in the past it was to fundraise for the school), and in my town where a half dozen Catholic schools have been closed in my lifetime I drive past billboards for Catholic education with a beaming young boy who is obviously not local (and one may reasonably assume isn’t even Catholic). My diocese participates in political activism only designed to provide private education for our urban populations (much of which aren’t even Catholic); my children attend pubic school and I doubt there is a vocation among them (considering the state of the CCD programs). They receive the sacraments while knowing I am not in a position to contribute much financially (these businesses have plenty).
This Pope isn’t inspiring me to change my relationship with the Church at all.
Any time a bishop speaks publicly about a matter on which Catholics are at liberty to disagree with him, he’s abusing his office.
If a bishop says that it is the duty of the state to outlaw and punish abortion, no Catholic is at liberty to disagree with him.
If a bishop says the borders should be wide open, he’s abusing his office.
Since Popes have not observed this rule, don’t expect any action against bishops who don’t observe it.
As a political, activist organization, the Catholic Church in America is the enemy of my country and my Catholic Faith.
More specifically, members of the Church hierarchy in the US are enemies of our faith and way of life. They are in fact collaborators of the government of our country.
And we have a Pope who emits nothing but baby talk about Islam and other evils in the world, while demonstrating by his appointments and demotions that he hates the Catholic Church.
