'God's Not Dead' Actor Kevin Sorbo Says Hollywood Is 'Waking Up' to Christian Films

One of the lead actors in the hit Christian film "God's Not Dead" recently shared his opinion on why Hollywood tends to make relatively few Christian-themed films.

Kevin Sorbo, an actor who played the skeptical professor in the blockbuster film, recently talked with Peter Heck on his radio program about "God's Not Dead" and Hollywood movies.

Observing the huge success of "God's Not Dead," Heck noted that there "is a market" for Christian films and asked Sorbo when he thinks Hollywood will "get it."

"I don't think it's an 'us vs. them' sort of mentality. But I live in this world. I'm out here, so I see what's going on," said Sorbo.

"I think they're finally starting to wake up. With the success of 'Son of God,' 'Heaven is for Real' and certainly 'God's Not Dead.'"

Sorbo also described Hollywood as an "opposite land" and commented that "everything we do" is different than what they should do.

"I hope they get it," said Sorbo, regarding the demand for more Christian films as seen with the commercial success of the aforementioned faith-based films. "It is called show business after all."

This is not the first time Sorbo has been critical of the ideological climate in Hollywood, which he said he considers to be problematic.

In a March 2013 interview with the anchors of the television program Fox & Friends, Sorbo called the Hollywood entertainment industry the "least tolerant people" in America.

"I certainly get into trouble in Hollywood for some of the things I say, but I am one of the true independent voices in Hollywood," Sorbo said. "I look at both sides of the aisle, look at who's going to really help this country. … Things aren't going that great right now; I think that's very obvious to most people."

A producer will back a film if it will put people in seats. Satin, Angles, God most don’t care. They are different people

I do not agree. There are so many films made which never put people in seats, but get awards, recognition, and support for other projects. Ideology almost always trumps profit. The few big winning films provide the funds for the no-profitable but artistically progressive films.

I am sure there are some in Hollywood who look at us as nothing more than peasants who should be happy to provide the money for them to live out their dreams and ideology on screen.

My only problem with it was the fact that they ended it with 10 minutes of Newsboys concert footage. It would have been much more powerful if they hadn’t made it essentially a music video. The way it ended, nobody was aware of the outcome of Sorbo’s character’s decision.

I was much more impressed with the movie “What if...” Kevin Sorbo did a great job in it...see it on Netflix if you have it.

I found it a slight step up from most Christian films.

I've been making movies for four years now and know a very little about although karnage is a pro, but while it's true that Christian movies like "Facing the Giants" makes good money (about 2-5x investment depending on the film), the grosses ( I.e. audiences) are limited. These movies really do speak to the choir.

I have thought---and I think karnage might agree---that Christian movies that reach beyond the church, and this requires sophisticated movie-making that is thought-provoking.

One of the best I found was made by. NON-Christian producers, called "The Gospel."

Anyway yes, Christian movies make money but they have a low ceiling as far as Hollywood money guys are concerned, so in a sense it is about the money.

His wife Samantha, aka Sam, has a terrific radio show also.
If your locality has her show take a listen.
The Sam Sorbo Show overlaps Rush here in Raleigh.
I usually stick with Sam for that hour.

There seems to be a number of films highlighted at the Cannes film festival that never get shown to the wider public. They seem to have been made just to show to each other and give each other prizes. The money to make them had to come from somewhere.
