Russian Orthodox Church Cancels Lutheran Dialogue Over Gay Rights

The Russian Orthodox Church has cancelled an official doctrinal dialogue with the Finnish Lutheran Church over the Lutheran stance on homosexuality. The Orthodox side wanted to pre-approve a communique before the meeting, but talks broke down over the Finns’ refusal to condemn homosexuality.

Finnish and Russian attitudes to gay rights are poles apart, and that’s helping to derail doctrinal dialogues between the two countries’ largest religions. Archbishop Kari Mäkinen says that he was forced to cancel planned ecumenical dialogues when he met the Russia Patriarch Kiril in Moscow.

The Russian Orthodox Church wanted to agree a statement in advance, as the meeting was scheduled to discuss anthropology—an area where sexuality was bound to come up.

”Our church’s line, which doesn’t directly condemn homosexuality, is such that from their point of view they don’t want to continue official ecumenical discussions,” said Mäkinen.

Mäkinen said that the Russian side wanted to agree a negative statement on homosexuality, but that the Lutheran church takes a different tack. In his opinion the end result of the talks should not be dictated in advance.

Wikipedia:This is not a complete list, but aims to provide a comprehensible overview of the diversity among denominations of Christianity. As there are reported to be approximately 41,000 Christian denominations (figure includes overlap between countries), many of which cannot be verified to be significant, only those denominations with Wikipedia articles will be listed in order to ensure that all entries on this list are notable and verifiable. I don't think there IS a complete list as denominations continuously spring forth and disappear. I mean no disrespect but that's what the research seems to indicate. It will take some fishing to get them all, but if you really want the list I'm sure you will 'fish.' Sorry!

The list does not exist - anywhere. Why? Because the 30,000 number is total bull.

Had Albert of Mainz not been so hasty in selling indulgences to pay for his purchase of his bishoprics, perhaps Dr. Luther would have been less hasty in protesting the practice.

Since Jesus left His Church in the hands of mere mortals, problem clergy WOULD thereby exist. Expecting perfection from anyone besides God is foolish, naive and illogical.

The media have ALWAYS taken SPECIAL delight in public pillorying of Catholic clergy and Evangelicals.

That fellow FReepers continue that verbal persecution is simply a showing of THEIR personal lacunae.

GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS.

The CATHOLIC CHURCH says 30,000 Protestant denominations; the Protestants say 40,000. But, why believe Google? CHECK OUT THEIR NUMBERS by the Protestants.
They differentiate THEMSELVES by a variety of names. THEY chose their names and consider themselves DIFFERENT denominations. They don't even just call themselves Lutherans or Calvinists; they use all kinds of other names for themselves.

Since THEY chose those different names, I ASSUME they did so because they BELIEVED in different doctrine, that is, different enough to separate themselves from other Protestant denominations. I wonder why you don't believe the Protestant view of THEMSELVES.
To me, it doesn't matter as they are ALL Christians. The numbers and variety of Protestant denominations show me how VERY much missionary work was done by those intrepid ministers. Well, I've heard from FReepers that Mormons aren't really Christians since they believe that Jesus and Lucifer were brothers. I asked a Mormon relative who converted (from Episcopalian to Mormonism to Catholicism) about that. He agreed with what the FReepers said about Mormonism.

The Catholic Church has variations too but I didn't think that you would be interested in them.

I didn't include any Orthodoxy because some people think they are Catholics and others say they are Protestant. But, you can look them up if you want. This site puts them as Protestants. Doesn't matter, I suppose.

Excuse some of the numbering errors. My eyes were starting to cross.

Only our good Lord can keep track of all this!

Protestantism - 800 million
Estimates of the total number of Protestants are very uncertain, partly because of the difficulty in determining which denominations should be placed in the category. It seems however clear that Protestantism is the second largest major group of Christians after Catholicism by number of followers. Often that number is put at 800 million. Some sources, which put the number at 800 million, include also Anglicanism (see below) within Protestantism.
