The Following is from "Smith's Bible Dictionary, 1901, and has some good cross-references for the Job of "Ambassador":

Ambassador, [E] a person of high rank employed by a government to represent it and transact its business at the seat of government of some other power. The earliest examples of ambassadors employed occur in ( Numbers 20:14 ; 21:21 ; Judges 11:7-19 ) afterwards in that of the fraudulent Gibeonites, ( Joshua 9:4 ) etc., and in the instances of civic strife mentioned ( Judges 11:12 ) and Judg 20:12 Ambassadors are found to have been employed not only on occasions of hostile challenge or insolent menace, ( 1 Kings 20:2 1 Kings 20:6 ; 2 Kings 14:8 ) but of friendly compliment, of request for alliance or other aid, of submissive deprecation and of curious inquiry. ( 2 Kings 14:8 ; 16:7 ; 18:14 ; 2 Chronicles 32:31 ) Ministers are called ambassadors of Christ. [E] indicates this entry was also found in Easton's Bible Dictionary

The Greek Word for "Ambassador" in the Passage from 2 Corinthians is:

Which means "Elder, or "One who goes before"e, ie: a messenger or forerunner.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Today we begin a new "Topical Study" in the Scriptures about Jobs and professions in the Bible. Some of these jobs are obsolete, and some are timeless.

Today, we speak of one of the most ancient and important jobs of civilization, that of an Ambassador. The Greek word used in 2 Corinthians is presbeuó, and it is the root of the English word "Presbyter". The word implies authority and dignity, and also means "Elder" in the governing sense. Paul urges Christians to be "Ambassadors for Christ" in a way that displays Wisdom, Dignity, and Integrity.

Just as it is frustrating to see Americans behaving badly abroad (especially those who "represent" us! Ugh!), it is also very discouraging to see those who call themselves "religious" acting like fools in public. Instant communications and social media have made it even more widespread.

Let us pray that those who represent America to the world become true ambassadors, not only of Godly wisdom, but the true intentions of the American people, rather than their own agenda.
