A sacrilegious television show on the Cinemax cable television channel is coming under fire from Catholics today because it features a nun performing an abortion.

The Knick is a television drama series on Cinemax directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Clive Owen. The program looks at the professional and personal lives of Dr. John W. Thackery (played by Owen) and the staff at the fictional Knickerbocker Hospital (“the Knick”) during the early part of the twentieth century. Abortion was not legal during this time.

theknickThe August 15 episode of “The Knick” features Sister Harriet, a nurse played by Cara Seymour who runs an orphanage and who visits an Irish Catholic woman, Nora, who wants an abortion. The woman doesn’t want her husband to find out.

During the exchange, Sister Harriet says: “Your husband will know nothing of it. I promise.”

“Will God forgive me? I don’t want to go to hell for killing a baby,” Nora asks.

“He knows that you suffered. I believe the Lord’s compassion will be yours,” the Catholic nun responds.

At this point, audience is led to believe that the nun performs the abortion.

Bill Donohue of the Catholic League is upset by the program.

“It is no secret that Hollywood is a big pro-abortion town, but to depict a nun who performs an abortion is a new low,” he told LifeNews.com. “The only saving grace in this episode is the real-life recognition of the woman who is about to have the abortion: she admits that her baby is going to be killed.”

In Hollywood, the secular sacrament trumps the religious one every time.

>> Bill Donohue of the Catholic League is upset by the program.

Can’t say I blame him for being upset.

It’s beyond time that Christians speak out against the popular culture, WHEREVER it conflicts with GOD’s teaching.

Blessings on you, in JESUS’ name, for bringing this to our attention.

They let that slip.

That’s a shame. I’ve been waiting a year for this show. They built the set for it right outside my classroom window. The building behind the hospital facade is the former Boys High School in Bed-Stuy. I worked there for about a month, up to around the time they started filming.

What a shame I just heard about this show, now I will never watch it.

And they said something very interesting too, they wanted to have authentic looking light for the time period, so they have some high-powered camera that enables you to shoot in really low light.

When Soderburgh was watching the footage he was thinking that something was very different, but it took him a while to realize what it was.

It was the eyes of the actors, their pupils were not all small from being shot in bright lights.

So, I thought that was fascinating, but I won’t see it now.

I sincerely doubt a lot of nuns performed abortions, then or even now.

More anti-Catholic cr*p, that’s all this is.

How can she be a nun when performing an abortion is an automatic excommunication?

Let's counter with a comedy show featuring Obama telling the truth. Fight fire with fire I say!

I just sent an e-mail to Mr. Keith Cocozza expressing the SHAME he should feel for airing such an anti-God, anti-woman, anti-babies and anti-life production.

Sister Harriet?

No nun before Vatican II had such a cutsy name. They chose a saint’s name, often combined with the name of Mary or another saint or feast.

That alone suggests the story lacks historical accuracy.
