Because homosexuals have more disposable income than the average, and they spend a larger proportion on houses and household goods.

I miss the 50’s type of programming too. I have made a point to always wear a dress to work (teacher) a point that is not lost on my students. I get compliments frequently and from boys I would never think they’d notice. I think it’s a lot easier to get dressed in the morning when I don’t have to coordinate parts and I feel maybe once in these little munchkins lives they will see how women used to dress to go out in public. I like slacks and capris, but I feel more professional and like a lady in a dress. I gave away all my jeans and have sworn them off, they are not comfortable to me and are hot, not to mention unflattering on me. I heard on a television interview years ago an old lady who always wore a hat to church say, “I feel like a woman in a dress, but I feel like a lady in a hat”. I never forgot that.

The culture always seems akin to a stream, with most of the population drifting along with it, taking on its perspective without even noticing the changes. Those few who jump off it for a few years really begin to recognize what has been a massive downward projectory.

Back in the early 80's, I had a buddy that when we got together, we'd always see movies. 2-3 times a week. We saw virtually everything.

I thought it was great. Another friend said that I had become desensitized to things. I thought I had been "toughened up". That violence and what not no longer bothered me.

By the late 80's my buddy and I had stopped hanging out so much, so I didn't go to movies as often, to where now, hardly ever do I go to one. Once, twice, maybe 3 times in a year. Maybe none for a year or 2 or 3.

I have to say, my perspective on things has changed considerably.

Blood and gore and gratuitous violence...ON TV...turns me off.

I have seen things on normal tv, that can bother me days later. And I know its just a tv show.

Because of that, I avoid things on tv.

There are times, flipping through the channels, I'll come upon something. I start watching, then the show starts leading in a bad direction. I turn the channel before it gets there. I know that that scene will be locked in my brain for a few days.

I hate movies like Saw or Texas Chainsaw Massacre or anything else in that genre.

Though just a movie, a story, to grab your attention and shock you. I'm offended at the cheapness of life in them. Though just stories, they represent potential real people. Husbands, wives, sons and daughters. Created beings by God. With value. Far more value than to be butchered for someones "entertainment".

I was one of those, in that stream. I jumped out.
You are absolutely correct.

Many of the good old shows are on rerun television, but the commercials can be horrible.

Sometimes you can get a whole TV series cheap on DVD -- like $5-$10.

Every once in awhile, especially on a Saturday or Sunday night, I'll come across a PBS station airing Lawrence Welk.

I grew up watching him and so it's quite nostalgic for me.

He was truly a great man. I've read some stuff on him. He was VERY COMMITTED to putting out a wholesome show. Even by the standards of the day.

I know some stuff can be bought on DVD, but I wish DVDs filled with full programs were available.

Most modern creative people don’t know how to create likable heroes anymore. It seems like the lead characters are mostly multiple-married lowlifes who sleep around and have other character issues. What stands out to me about many current TV shows is how dripping with cynicism the characters usually are.I suppose this passes for “keeping it real”. And the creative people for the most part don’t seem to have a clue as how to portray virtue, thinking it an abnormal repression or mental illness.

WE have, and many cities have, the Live Well Network, which has lovely, interesting and charming shows. They have various cooking shows including Joey Fatone’s “My Family Recipe Rocks,” a charming show on renting vacation homes, a fun travel show that takes us on long hikes in gorgeous places, etc. I’ve yet to see anything objectionable on this network. I don’t like everything they do, but in general, it’s a joy to watch.

You can see whether LiveWell is available in your town: http://livewellnetwork.com/index

I enjoy LiveWell’s reruns of the best daytime show I’ve ever seen, Steven and Chris. This was originally on CBC, Canadian TV. Steven and Chris are charming, funny, quick-witted, and have a wide variety of guests who actually do things. It’s sort of a hands-on, how-to approach. They have a decorating segment, a cooking segment (made really funny by their ineptitude in the kitchen), fashion segment, makeup segment, exercise segment, the occasional cocktail recipe segment etc. …
It’s a live studio show and they treat the audience like good friends, .also treat their guests like dear friends, NEVER A NASTY WORD. It’s the only daytime show I’ve ever watched intentionally—it always makes me smile. LiveWell broadcasts it at night too.

The NCAA might have hated the show, but white Americans and black Americans alike loved it. I have a lot of Amos & Andy on DVD and watch it when I want to see what classic TV was all about. Amos & Andy was great because it had the same writers and producers as the Honeymooners.
