French Cardinal ‘Urged Iraqi Christians to Remain in Homeland’

Iraqi Christians driven from their homes by Islamist terrorists should not flee their country, a French cardinal reportedly said this week.

Cardinal Philippe Barbarin of Lyon celebrated Mass in St Joseph’s Church, Ankawa, and was quoted as telling the Iraqis that Pope Francis wanted Christians to remain there.

Sahar Mansour, a refugee who attended the July 28 Mass for peace in Iraq, said the cardinal told the congregation of more than 1,000 people, many of whom had fled Mosul as the city fell to Islamic State fighters in June, that the Pope’s wish was for them “to be strong and stay in their homeland” and to follow the example of Christ.

With all of his possessions, ready to set up housekeeping, right?

This was really one of the stupidest things I’ve heard a churchman say about the Iraq situation. Good for France. Heck, the US should actually offer to take in some REAL persecuted refugees, and it would be to our benefit.

Christians were the commercial mainstay of Iraq and in fact virtually all of the Islamic countries that are now exterminating them. Many of these places also had a Jewish commercial class....nice upon a time.

Muslims don’t do anything. They can only destroy.

It’s easy to tell someone else to subject themself and their loved ones to robbery, rape, torture and murder.

Will Cardinal Philip join them in their martyrdom?

The Pope, iirc, lamented the vanishing Christian presence, but I don’t think he told them to stay there. That was the bizarre take of this particular cardinal, and since Francis never comes out and corrects or clarifies anything, they all feel free to misuse his words for their purposes.

I understand that the Kurds have offered sanctuary to fleeing Christians.

Is there a direct quote from him or is this just a Cardinal saying it?

How can he suggest that ANYONE with a Christian identity stay in a war ravaged land that is controlled by Islamic terrorists?

Here we are (rightly) blasting away at muslims for using kids as human shields, then this pope advocates unarmed Christian families returning back to their former homes in Iraq to be slaughtered like animals.

JPII would NEVER have advocated this. Francis can kiss my recovering-catholic a**.
