Why do Protestant lay people hate clergy?

Posted on 07/26/2014 4:41:46 AM PDT by michaelwlf3

I am coming up on my first year as an ordained minister in a continuing Anglican church, and I have noticed that participating on political forums (even when the topic is religious) I find that my opinions and postings more often than not generate more hatred than anything else. Among the things I often hear are that the laity are the real priests and that I am a Pharisee, that my vocation disqualifies me from offering an opinion on anything Christian because I am too narrow minded, and (my personal favorite) because I look too Catholic I must be a child molester.

Are these people really Christians?

Peter's, "ἀναγεννάω" (anagennaō) is not really a birth at all, but a change in state of mind, a regeneration, to follow Yeshua.

1 Corinthians 14:27
No more than two or three should speak in tongues. They must speak one at a time, and someone must interpret what they say.

Why should I have to change my image because you and your little friends here can’t act like Christians?

Galatians 5:12
As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves!

The Catholic Hitler and his ilk had innumerable examples of anti-Semitic literature to draw from, and blaming Luther's 500 year old TJATL as a the sole cause of their actions is pitiable.

If a person is drowning; there is NO way you can pry the straw from between his fingers.

That’s about the most ignorant thing you have said yet.

It appears that you are anticipating an even more ignorant statement in the future.

Remember that 'ignorant' means a lack of knowledge.

Insulting may have been the word you should have used.

verga, you should also remember that while some are cynical, bear with it as they read the Bible they want to, coming up with theology like "Gap theory" that the world was created twice -- once in Genesis 1:1 and the second in the next few verses.

HMMMmmm...

I must have missed this idea in this thread.

Which reply number contained it?

The really funny thing is that Michael is an ordained Protestant Deacon and it took less than 30 posts for the ignorant prots to turn it into an anti-Catholic scree. Combine that with the whole "Stupid for Jesus" thing and it is a scene right out of "Deliverance."

“Remember that ‘ignorant’ means a lack of knowledge.

No, “ignorant” was what I meant. Remember what St. Athanasius said:

“Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the catholic faith. Which faith except every one do keep whole and undefiled; without doubt he shall perish everlastingly. And the catholic faith is this: That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity; Neither confounding the Persons; nor dividing the Essence.”

All who adhere to the Creeds hold to the “catholic” faith, the most basic of beliefs among Christians.

“Catholic” is not a dirty word, this guy uses it as a perjorative.

And they keep proving my point. This is the 21st century, I thought we were beyond all of this witch hunting.

The Church's pastor is Jesus Christ. The ministers in front are ministers. They come and they go. Some are good at preaching, some at listening, some at ministering, some at meditation. We should not expect the pastor to be a superman and have all of these qualities in one person.

This is true. I stated what usually occurs to a strong degree, as the hearers of the word tend to look for its interpretation by how the preachers of it manifest it in their lives and actions - which is what constitutes what one really believes, not necessarily profession. (Ja. 2:18)

Neither can blame Luther for their hatred of Jewry.

On April 29th 1946

Julius Streicher, NSDAP member and publisher of Der Sturmer, was cross-examined at Nuremberg by Dr Marx:

Marx: Witness, what aims did you pursue with your speeches and your articles in Der Sturmer?

Streicher: The speeches and articles which I wrote were meant to inform the public on a question which appeared to me one of the most important questions. I did not intend to agitate or inflame but to enlighten.

Marx: Apart from your weekly journal, and particularly after the Party came into power, were there any other publications in Germany which treated the Jewish question in an anti-Semitic way?

Streicher: Anti-Semitic publications have existed in Germany for centuries. A book I had, written by Dr. Martin Luther, was, for instance, confiscated. Dr. Martin Luther would very probably sit in my place in the defendants’ dock today, if this book had been taken into consideration by the prosecution. In the book, “The Jews and Their Lies”, Dr. Martin Luther writes that the Jews are a serpent’s brood and one should burn down their synagogues and destroy them…

"God wrote the Koran"..

metmom: It's good to know you got something right.

whatever makes you happy to think, go ahead. For me, in contrast, we Christians do not say "God wrote the Bible". For that matter I also disagree with the statement you said above, as the Koran isn't written by God

sorry, but you misunderstood me. You said "God wrote it"

I said the books of the Bible (note the plural) are God-breathed, but they are not exact dictation and neither are they written by God as you state. To say that He wrote it is wrong

So, to answer your question, The Bible is the inspired Word of God. It's just not "written by God" as your post stated

“Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the catholic faith.

Whoever would be saved needs to reconciled with God through Jesus Christ.

Having *the faith* isn't going to do it.

Holding to certain doctrines, belonging to the *right* church, whatever, isn't going to cut it.

It's Jesus who saved by trusting in Him.

We have to have faith in Him, not faith in our *faith*.

I noticed that it took the "christians" here less than 30 posts to turn it anti-Catholic, and less than 100 to turn it into full blown tidal wave of anti-Catholicism, which is pretty funny since you are not Catholic.

Considering the TITLE of the thread:

Why do Protestant lay people hate clergy?

Why did it take so LONG?
