"Why Christians get the 10 commandments wrong" (Salon)
Salon ^ | 7/14/14 | Valerie Tarico

Posted on 07/15/2014 3:17:34 PM PDT by Faith Presses On

The American Bible Society funds an annual “State of the Bible” survey, and this spring the Christian Post cheered some of their findings: “The Bible continues to dominate both mind space and book retail space as America’s undisputed best-seller.” According to the study, conducted by Barna, over 88 percent of American homes contain a Bible. In fact, the average is 4.7 copies per household.

Now, I should note that a young non-religious friend once came home from school with a bright green Gideon’s New Testament that she later touted as a reserve of fine rolling papers, which may explain why the household average isn’t a solid 5.

But most Americans treat the Bible with some degree of deference.

Among adults who responded to the survey, 56% were classified as “pro-Bible” meaning they think it is the actual or inspired word of God with no errors. More than a quarter said that they read from the Good Book daily or at least several times a week. Fully half said the Bible contains everything a person needs to know to lead a meaningful life.

It’s interesting that it’s the Christians that are getting it wrong; did salon forget about the Jews who wrote this, or are the Jews getting it right where the Christians are not? At any rate, given the well known reputation salon has for deep religious scholarship, it’s gratifying that they’ve finally straightened things out for the Christians who’ve gotten it all wrong for all of these thousands of years.

But if someone told her it sounded like she was advocating for bestiality, incest and probably pedophilia, too, she would say they were “being paranoid.”

Thank you for posting all that background information. I remember reading about some of her abortion remarks but didn’t realize the author of this piece was the one who made them.

Is that from a version of the Bible or the Salvation paraphrase?

I was outside with my new Doberman puppy, and a pair of Filipino young men with white shirts came down the street. I knew what was coming and was prepared. they wanted to give me their tracts in English and Tagalog.

They got a full dose of Scripture and an admonition not to believe what they are being taught. I told them there is only one ETERNAL God and that they have no hope without Him. After spending 10-15 minutes in witness to them, they asked me if I wanted to find out more about their faith.

I declined! Hehe!!!

LOL! Saints aren’t gods. Mary isn’t a god.

Please don’t try to make this a truth, for your pictures portray only praying....and in my judgment are being used wrongly.

The Catholic tradition uses the division of the Commandments established by St. Augustine. (The Lutheran confessions also use this numbering, while some other confessions & traditions use slightly different numberings.)

Here are the Catholic Ten Commandments:
1. I am the LORD your God. You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.
2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
3. Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.
4. Honor your father and your mother.
5. You shall not kill.
6. You shall not commit adultery.
7. You shall not steal.
8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
9. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.
10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.

From the Vatican

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

Exodus 20 2-17

Deuteronomy 5:6-21

A Traditional Catechetical Formula

I am the LORD your God,
who brought you out
of the land of Egypt,
out of the house of bondage.

I am the LORD your God,
who brought you out
of the land of Egypt,
out of the house of bondage.

1. I am the LORD your God:
you shall not have
strange Gods before me.

You shall have no other gods before me.
You shall not make for yourself a graven image,
or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above,
or that is in the earth beneath,
or that is in the water under the earth;
you shall not bow down to them or serve them;
for I the LORD your God am a jealous God,
visiting the iniquity of the fathers
upon the children to the third and the fourth
generation of those who hate me,
but showing steadfast love to thousands of those
who love me and keep my commandments.

You shall have no other gods before me
. . .

You shall not take
the name of the LORD your God in vain;
for the LORD will not hold him guiltless
who takes his name in vain.

You shall not take
the name of the LORD your God in vain
. . .

2. You shall not take
the name of the LORD your God in vain.

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Six days you shall labor, and do all your work;
but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God;
in it you shall not do any work, you, or your son,
or your daughter, your manservant,
or your maidservant or your cattle,
or the sojourner who is within your gates;
for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them,
and rested the seventh day;
therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and hallowed it.

Observe the sabbath day,
to keep it holy
. . .

3. Remember to keep holy the LORD'S Day.

Honor your father and your mother,
that your days may be long in the land
which the LORD your God gives you.

Honor your father and your mother
. . .

4. Honor your father and your mother.

You shall not kill.

You shall not kill.

5. You shall not kill.

You shall not commit adultery.

Neither shall you commit adultery.

6. You shall not commit adultery.

You shall not steal.

Neither shall you steal.

7. You shall not steal.

You shall not bear false witness
against your neighbor.

Neither shall you bear false witness
against your neighbor.

8. You shall not bear false witness
against your neighbor.

You shall not covet your neighbor's house;
you shall not covet your neighbor's wife,
or his manservant, or his maidservant,
or his ox, or his ass,
or anything that is your neighbor's.

Neither shall you covet
your neighbor's wife . . .

You shall not desire . . .
anything that is your neighbor's.

9. You shall not covet
your neighbor's wife.

10. You shall not covet
your neighbor's goods.

I know that already, but it is obvious to the most casual observer that most Roman Catholics (that I know) pray to those dead people and lift Mary up to the post of co-redemptress (a position never found in Scripture). Your list of commandments also follows the usual ignoring of the second which specifically forbids your groups idolatry!

As for bowing down, your judgment is not in following with the facts! It does follow your usual form of never straying from the "party line"! Obama would be proud to have such a blind follower.

As opposed to this type of protestant idolatry:

Hahahahahaaaaa

So, we see an Indian youth depicted as a Protestant, and a snake handler. I see neither of them "bowing down to idols". The Indian is likely a Muzzie (a friend of your Pope), since the photo tag reveals he is a madras student. The snake guy is showing his faith in the power of God, in reference to a Scripture. Those are members of a small sect and certainly don't represent the normal Protestant.

You make a poor respondent with these feeble attempts. Try to be more creative. I can google any number of photos showing Roman Catholic idolatry.

Sure. I mean why not? What's the difference really between the Muslim's understanding of the Quran and a Protestant's understanding of the Bible. The Word of God, after all, is a person of the Trinity, and not a book. Bibliolatry is unhealthy and unscriptural.

So sorry to have offended your creative sensibilities. I suppose it is a pre-requisite for being a protestant, however.
