That's right; the act of committing a mortal sin means that you have rejected God.
That's why the prudent Catholic refrains from committing mortal sins.
Given the nature of mortal sins, it's really not that hard.
I think they're easier to commit that one realizes. For example, adultery. Jesus said if you look upon a woman with lust in your heart, that's adultery.
If we are honest, this happens on a frequency most of us don't want to admit. And if we say it doesn't now we're lying.
However, the concept of mortal and venial sins and their impact on severing God's grace, that is His gift of salvation, is not Biblical.
Without faith in Christ, all sin seperates us from God. Belief in Christ restores and maintains our relationship with God.

The catechism defines mortal sin to include these as mortal sins
>Lying—Lying is the most direct offense against the truth. It is gravely sinful when it significantly degrades the truth. The gravity of this sin is measured by the truth it perverts, the circumstances, intentions of the liar and harm done to the victims (CCC 2484).

>Avarice—Avarice is greed and the desire to amass earthly goods without limit. It is a passion for riches and luxury. Those who seek temporal happiness at the expense of spiritual duties, risk the grave sin of avarice. Avarice is one of the deadly vices (CCC 2536).
Do you exceed the speed limit?
>Endangering their own and others' safety by drunkenness or a love of speed on the road, at sea or in the air
lots of catholics vote for pro-abortion candidates...the church even allows pro-abortion politicians to participate in Communion!

ever get a little tipsy? For that matter do you even drink alcohol knowing the possible dangers?
Alcohol Abuse—Alcohol abuse can also be excessively dangerous and harmful to the body, and sometimes to neighbors (CCC 2290).. Because it is also contrary to temperance and is a disordered passion, it is a grave sin (1 Corinthians 6:9-10).
ever seen a woman or man naked at the movies?
>Pornography—Pornography is the display of intimate real or simulated sexual acts to a third party. Because it removes the marriage act from within the sacramental sanctity of marriage, and perverts sex, it is gravely contrary to charity (CCC 2354).
Do you understand why I said if you're catholic you better keep the priest close by? Not a day goes by a "mortal sin" is not committed. There is no way, not even on our best day, do we ever come close to being "good enough" for God.
If you believe this, your life must be in constant fear of dying without having seen the priest. That is not how God has intended us to live as His children.
Paul described our efforts at this as being like filthy rags.
This list, and it's not inclusive, shows us just how wretched we really are and why we need a Savior to cleanse us from all unrighteousness: that includes the mortal and venial sins.
Only the shed blood of Christ can do this.
