Here is a 2006 article on it from th Washington Post.

It takes it more seriously, but has an underlying premise that establishing a Caliphate is not necessarily radical.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/13/AR2006011301816_pf.html

The title is “Reunified Islam: Unlikely but Not Entirely Radical
Restoration of Caliphate, Attacked by Bush, Resonates With Mainstream Muslims”

It quotes Bush in this passage: “In language evoking the Cold War, Bush has cast the conflict in Iraq as the pivotal battleground in a larger contest between advocates of freedom and those who seek to establish ‘a totalitarian Islamic empire reaching from Spain to Indonesia.’”

Indeed.
9/11 was also the Date when islam was defeated at the gates of Vienna.

It was also the date of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, but that one could just be a coincidence.

This year marks the 100th Anniversary of WW1, which precipitated the destruction of the Ottoman Empire, The end of the caliphate, the liberation of Jerusalem from the Turks, the Russian Revolution, and the partition of the Middle east into a bunch of artificial countries. (Not to mention sowing the seeds for WW2!)

These guys carry a grudge forever, it seems.

Are the people doubting the caliphate will succeed discussing why ISIS, so far, has succeeded fabulously? => No.

Why has ISIS succeeded so far?

They have only gone after areas with a Sunni majority. Northern Iraq has a Sunni majority and so ISIS is greeted with parades the night they take over.

Mosul, Irak: ISIS Parade
http://youtu.be/wGpNmKCvK4A

And...ISIS has very efficient death squads and long death lists as you can see from their videos.

If ISIS should attack an area with a Shiite majority they need hundreds of men to hold what they may hold now with 4 or 5 head cutters. Why risk amazing success pursuing Shiite majority areas, Baghdad and southeast Iraq -that would be foolish.

What’s the next Sunni rich target?

By far it’s Jordan with a 95% Sunni Muslim population. => More parades!

Muslims are coming to America in droves.

Apparently they are free to have and practice anti American training with the possible intention of taking action against America.

Makes no sense ...

AQ has had different tactics to IS (ISIS). The latter is much more militant & doesn't take prisoners, at all. It is so far the most militant Islamic group I am aware of.

The history & idea of colonization of Arab countries in the ME and North Africa, among muslims in those regions in particular, are indelibly imprinted in their minds. And, they are, historically, correct about countries like Iraq & Syria; they were artifically created.

Incidentally, if you look at Iran's Islamic Republic constitution, you'll note that it specifically outlines the objective of establishing a worldwide Islamic state. That constitution came about in 1980-81. So, it's not a new idea.

However, Iran's Islamic Republic constitution has many other Islamic elements that were invented by Khomeini himself & are not universal in the Muslim world.

Equally, of the total muslim population worldwide, approximately 10-13% are shia and 87-90% are sunni. Most Shia muslims live in Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, and India. Therefore, Khomeinist regime in Iran had difficulty exporting its global objective of an Islamic Caliphate.

This isn't good at all. It will have global implications & impact in coming years & decades. Unfortunately, I don't think the West has the will or the understanding to put an end to it. This is the price we pay for lack of long term vision, and assisting Islamic groups around the world to topple secular dictators, all in the name of democracy.
