That is very regrettable. I felt sucker-punched, that's for sure. He basically rewarded the disobedient: "easier to get forgiveness than permission," as they say.

It's the kind of thing that guarantees cynicism.

Regarding canonizations, a devil’s advocate would have had a field day with Pope John Paul II’s capitulations and reversals; but guess who abolished that position?
