Maybe you should reconsider. Gary is a quiet college town (home of Indiana University Northwest) with friendly people, near the beach and the Indiana Dunes National Seashore, yet just minutes away from Chicago's Loop. It has even been immortalized in song. Gary should be a swell place to take a vacation.
