Being an atheist, how do you reconcile the fact that nothing can proceed from nothing...With not believing in a higher power?

I recently read New Proofs for the Existence of God by Spitzer. It creates a case for deism, but not theism. Is there some kind of universal life force? Maybe. I'll grant that much. But a god who cares about humans and who set up rules for them? Sorry, but I'm not buying.
