Mohler [Southern Baptist] Says Insurance Mandate Not Just 'Catholic' Issue

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (ABP) – A Southern Baptist seminary president applauded Roman Catholic bishops for refusing to obey an insurance mandate forcing employers to offer coverage for contraceptives and sterilization, and predicted that evangelical leaders will soon face similar choices.

“Our religious liberty is being similarly subverted and attacked,” Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, said of the Obama administration’s inclusion of pregnancy in “preventive services” that health insurers must provide.

In his daily podcast briefing Jan. 31, Mohler commented on a letter from bishops read in Catholic churches Jan. 27 stating in part, “We cannot -- we will not -- comply with this unjust law.”

“You at least have to admire the courage of the Roman Catholic bishops in saying they are willing to go to jail rather than to comply with this,” Mohler said. “How many evangelical presidents and pastors and leaders will be willing to do the same? We’re going to find out in the coming months.”

Mohler said the insurance mandate “is not only a Catholic issue,” even though the mainstream media wants to present it that way. Not all Christians agree with the Catholic Church’s teaching against all forms of artificial birth control, he said, but they must be united in opposition to abortion.

First they came for the communists,

and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,

and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,

and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Jew.

Then they came for the Catholics,

and I didn’t speak out because I was Protestant.

Then they came for me

and there was no one left to speak out for me.

First they came…" is a famous statement attributed to pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the inactivity of German intellectuals following the Nazi rise to power and the purging of their chosen targets, group after group. The text of the quotation is usually presented roughly as follows:

So your point is that only Catholics voted for O? No evangelicals did?

As for your history comment, if you’re referring to US history, it is Catholics who have been the most oppressed religious group, Mormons excepted, in our country. If on the other hand, you are referring to more ancient history, I doubt that there is any Protestant religion that came from the old country that doesn’t have as many troubles with “religious liberty” as the Church.

I doubt that any post will cure you of your bitterness toward me and the Church, that is something that only you can ask Our Saviour for help with, but, I would come to your defense to practice your religion without gov’t interference any time. I mean that.

The typical Roman Catholic has far less power to affect church policy than an Evangelical. As you probably know, the RCC is a rather top down organization, with marching orders coming from Rome.

That said, many conservative Catholics do fight for what if right. Should we slam them because they don’t succeed?

I doubt there are any FReepers among the 55% of Catholics who voted for Hussein. I think we should encourage the 45% in their fight against the 55%, not bash them.

You are right, but this is not the model we were given in the Apostolic Era and can be corrected.

Please don't fall into the PC trap of thinking that criticism is "bashing". While I agree that it is unlikely that there are many obama supporters among them, their behavior is hypocritical in the least. On the one hand they run into some trouble and immediately call for Christians to come to their aid and on the other hand their church supports the party that is causing the problem. We see this hypocrisy over and over again, just look at the states with the highest abortion rates. They really haven't done anything to change this.

When someone asks for help we should first look and see what they are doing to fix the problem before we commit resources.

Right, because there have to be some reasonable limits on this "love your neighbor" stuff. I mean, it says so in the Bible ... I'm sure I can find it ... it has to be here somewhere ... maybe in 2nd Colossians, or is it 3rd Corinthians?
