Defending the Pope against Hot Air

by Thomas Peters on March 29th, 2010

Since this most recent attempt to smear Pope Benedict began a couple of weeks ago, I have felt little need to defend him on these pages, because no credible charges had been made against him

Well today, there still haven’t been any credible charges made against him, but the attacks keep coming so we have to take action. These attacks on the pope, after all, are at heart attacks on the Church. Look at what David Dayen of the liberal FireDogLake blog wrote:

“The cumulative effect of the scandals, across countries and continets, have sapped the pontiff’s ability to lead and blown a hole in any effort by the Church to raise morality in any context.”

Liberal Andrew Sullivan is writing daily for the resignation of the pope and the end of priestly celibacy. Meanwhile their have been scattered protests in London and a couple other places demanding the pope’s resignation. But these are the same people who can be counted on to demonstrate/write against the pope or the Church anytime. And when you talk to them, it’s clear they hate and feel hurt by the Church.

With people writing and doing such preposterous things about and to the Church and the pope, we need to respond with the truth. I find it very interesting that this attack has been leveled at the Church during Holy Week, when the Church is most trying to focus on Christ and His sufferings. Well, this year we can identify with some of His suffering a little more easily.

I am so disappointed, I have to say, with Laurie Goodstein of the New York Times. She should know better, and I think she has done something seriously wrong by being a part of these disingenuous efforts to attack the pope. Fr. Raymond Souza has penned an excellent concise response to her article. He writes: “The story is false. It is unsupported by its own documentation. Indeed, it gives every indication of being part of a coordinated campaign against Pope Benedict, rather than responsible journalism.” Goodstein used former Archbishop Rembert Weakland as a source for pete’s sake!

I’ve spent years covering stories which attempted to smear the pope. This most recent batch is no different, is is simply more intense. And I sincerely trust and hope the truth will once again come out.

If any real journalist is looking for a story here, I’d recommend they look at the behind-the-scenes coordination between the news “outlets” and demonstrations which are fomenting this story.

I’ll write more on this as soon as I get a chance … in the meantime I’d welcome your (charitable) discussion: What is the most disturbing thing you have seen written or claimed? What is the best defense of the pope you have come across? How have you heard other Catholics reacting to this reporting – do they believe the journalists or do they believe the pope?

update – more: Ross Douthat has a fairly even treatment of the situation, and what it means in terms of liberal/orthodox tendencies in interpreting it. And veteran Vatican-watcher John Allen documents the swift actions Pope Benedict, as Cardinal Ratzinger, took while in the CDF to address the problem of clergy sexual abuse. Raymond Arroyo has re-published a second op-ed by Fr. de Souza which is excellent.

update 2 – if you are looking for more reading, Sean Murphy at Catholic Education Resource Center has written a lengthy (80+ reference) and much shorter response to Christopher Hitchens’ “venemous attack” on the pope. George Weigel writes about the “Scoundrel [New York] Times” at On the Square. Finally, Fr. Longenecker debunks some of the myths surrounding media reports about pedophile priests.

update 3 – the Anchoress has a must-read update on this story, leading with this:

Archbishop Timothy Dolan got a stand ovation in the middle of mass, this weekend, for his passionate defense of Pope Benedict XVI against what seems to be a concerted effort to undo his papacy, via distortion and a media rushing-to-judge.

update 4 – even more context from John Allen. Damian Thompson is also an essential resource for this story, partly because he lives in the UK where some of the most violent attacks are being made.

The lying vermin are desperately trying to destroy the Pope. The catholic church is the single most powerful enemy of planetary communism.

Salvation:

I think this article is the one that really makes the NY Times look like the “Communist Anti-Catholics” they truly are. It is by Fr. Brundage, who was the Judicial Vicar of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and the Presiding Canonical Trial Judge for the Fr. Murphy’s sex abuse trial.

http://catholicanchor.org/wordpress/?p=601

The NY Times has never contacted him regarding the trial but now Fr. Brundage has gone public. I think every Catholic Diocesan newspaer should publish Fr. Brundage’s article.

regards

One more data point. Outrage is a homosexual organization.

Weakland must have “poofters” making up things and handing them to the NYT.

The demonization of the Catholic church is example #1 of the total power of the media. They have promoted this "abuse" scandal and set up the church as the target for scorn and hatred while leaving predatory homosexuality completely ignored.

Its not the church that is responsible...IT'S THE HOMOSEXUALS IN THE CHURCH!!

The media hates the Pope because he refuses to turn the Church into the empty relativist progressive dogma that has hijacked the Anglicans.

A key point that media has not contacted him......Go figure?

(In other words, they don’t want to know the truth — they just want to slime the Catholic Church. It’s not really about Pope Benedict; there have been attacks against the credibility of other Popes.

They are AFTER the one, holy Catholic and apostolic Church, period!!

Salvation:

No doubt about it, The Catholic Church is an institution that is the oldest continuest Institution on earth today, with the collapse of the Chinese Dynasty in the early 20th century. COmmunit hate “Tradition” as it ties us to the traditions and values of the the past, which means Western Civilization of which you don’t have without the Catholic Church. Hence, the CHurch as the visible sign and reminder of that Traditon has to be attacked and discredited so the Marixt-Commnunist can “create the future” and make it conform to their secularist-marxist ideology. For Communist and Marxist-secularist, history is something for them to create and thus Catholicism, with its history going back to antiquity and thus [to the Incarnation of Christ] has to be destroyed. THis has been, is now, and will be the battle that will be waged as Satan knows who the real McCoy is an the one who needs to be destroyed.

SCARED. TO. DEATH. (or should I say, “scared OF death.”) They know what their judgment will be. More whistling past the graveyard.

"They know what their judgment will be. More whistling past the graveyard."

Obviously, this does NOT refer to Fr. Brundage, etc., but to the creeps, pedophiles, and homosexuals who think demonstrating against Benedict is going to affect his mission. Like I said, more whistling past the graveyard...

I am not a Catholic and I have no axe to grind with the church. I express my sympathy to all the good Catholics out there, who are seeing their church and Pope viciously attacked by the media, leftists and atheists. That said, the church has, unfortunately, helped to create this problem. There are numerous cases where church officials have given some very bad people the “benefit of the doubt” and merely transferred accused priests from one location to another. There is an old maxim that “Justice must not only be done, it must be seen to be done”. In the Catholic church’s case, there are many, many examples in which justice was not seen to be done. These examples are now being exploited by those who would choose to attack the church.

Then-presiding judge for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee gives first-person account of church trial ...

The unmitigated sleaze of the 0bama media in perpetrating this globally coordinated attack on the Church and Pope Benedict XVI, during the most holy week of the year, is disgusting beyond belief. The liberal homosexual bed-wetters in the media, yes I mean you andy sullivan, are in many ways worse than the fr. Murphy's of the world. In the face of facts that prove the depravity of a homosexual lifestyle that assaults nature's creation, you not only deny the homosexual guilt of the involved criminals you continue to endorse/affirm their lifestyles that are the cause of these horrific and gruesome crimes.
