Obama’s not Pro-Abortion, He’s Just “Pro-Choice”: L’Osservatore Romano Editor

ROME, June 18, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – According to the editor-in-chief of the Vatican’s quasi-official newspaper, US President Barack Obama in his pre-presidential voting record may have “made decisions that certainly cannot be defined as pro-life,” but this does not make him “pro-abortion.”

“He was, rather, pro-choice,” said L’Osservatore Romano’s Gian Maria Vian.

Vian told the National Review Online (NRO), “We have noticed that his entire program prior to his election was more radical than it is revealing itself to be now that he is president. So this is what I meant when I said he didn’t sound like a pro-abortion president.”

The interview comes amid growing concerns that the Vatican has been attempting to downplay the US president’s vehemently pro-abortion voting record and the pro-abortion record of his current administration. A series of articles in L’Osservatore Romano praising Barack Obama and soft-pedalling the opposition of the US bishops have been heavily criticised by pro-life leaders. But those concerns turned to shock when Vian recently told an interviewer, “It is my clear conviction: Obama is not a pro-abortion president.”

Obama should change his name to the Great Svengali.

He just LOOKS at people and they change their minds.

And let's make it personal, stew:

If you think killing unborn children should be "left up to the mother", you're pro-death.

L’Osservatore does not reflect the positions of the Pope (in fact, it is frequently opposed to them, although it usually expresses this opposition in an obligue way) or even the important people in the Curia. The Jesuits who run it are letting their inner Protestant show. Or maybe that should be their inner Marxist.

Actually I was thinking more about a mother that does not want to abort her child. Does someone have to know what the mother will do prior to being considered pro-life or pro-abortion, if they just support a mothers decision?

What if the mother does not choose to abort, how could that person be considered pro-death? Does someone have to know the decision of the mother first?

What if the mother does not choose to abort

Irrelevant, and cut it out with the sophistry.

If you think deliberately killing an unborn child or not deliberately killing an unborn child is a legitimate choice ... simply up to the mother (as you put it) ... you're pro death.

That's what the "choice" you're talking about is all about.

Killing unborn babies.

Toss away all the euphemisms, and it's about as stark as you can get.

If you espouse the theory that a mother is actually entitled to decide whether or not she may have someone artificially induce the termination of her pregnancy, then you are pro-abortion. It matters not whether you are in fact a male who cannot carry your own child in a womb or a woman who has chosen not to engage in sexual intercourse to eliminate the chance of conception, nor another version thereof.

If it’s my question, how can it be irrelevant?

Your question has no bearing on the moral nature of choosing between murdering and not murdering an unborn child ... and it has no bearing on the moral nature of leaving the choice to murder or not murder an unborn child solely to the mother.

Therefore it is irrelevant. It is, in fact, a "red herring".

Again, cut it out with the sophistry.

You have my answer.

Deal with it.

I am pro-choice: I support the right of a man to beat his wife. This doesn’t mean that I’m pro-wife-beating, simply that I’m pro-choice. I personally believe that wife-beating is wrong, but the decision must be left up to the husband. I believe that wife-beating should be safe, legal, and rare.

I am pro-choice: I support the right of people to own slaves. This doesn’t mean that I’m pro-slavery, simply that I’m pro-choice. I personally believe that slavery is wrong, but the decision must be left up to the slave-owner. I support federal funding for slave trafficking as the most effective way to reduce slavery.

Anyone who disagrees with this is trying to legislate morality, which is unconstitutional.

Bingo. Say it every time: Pro-death.

Usually not just the death of unborn children, but the death of old people, the mentally and physically handicapped, political enemies, people of racial or religious groups “we” don’t like, etc. The more death, the better.

Death Eaters.

if a person said the decision of whether to own slaves should be left up to owner, that’s pro-slavery

to answer your question: pro-abortion

Yes, I understand it's usually done under extreme stress and there is no other option :-D /s

Now now, be nice. Or, are you talking about Obama's impending "creative balanced budget"? /s
