Fordham’s Folly (university conceals its decision to honor pro-abort)
ncr ^ | May 20, 2009 | Tom McFeely

The New York Post reports that Fordham University concealed its decision to honor New York’s pro-abortion Mayor Michael Bloomberg from Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York.

Bloomberg received an honorary degree last weekend at Fordham’s commencement and also spoke briefly at the ceremony.

“Dolan was ‘unaware that the mayor was speaking/getting a degree’ at Saturday’s commencement at the Jesuit school’s Bronx campus, his spokesman, Joseph Zwilling, wrote in an e-mail yesterday,” the Post reported.

Fordham has a history of honoring pro-abortion public figures and of failing to consult with the archbishop of New York. Cardinal Edward Egan, who served as New York’s archbishop until he was succeeded last month by Archbishop Dolan, rebuked the university last fall after the Fordham School of Law bestowed an honor on pro-abortion Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer.

At that time, following discussions between Cardinal Egan and Fordham, Zwilling said, “As a result of these discussions, the cardinal is confident that a mistake of this sort will not happen again,” The New York Times reported.

But the Post notes in its article that pro-abortion New York Sen. Chuck Schumer also “spoke at Fordham Law’s graduation in Manhattan on Sunday again apparently without Dolan’s knowledge.”

So unfortunately, it now appears clear Cardinal Egan’s confidence that Fordham would not repeat its folly of honoring a pro-abortion public figure — and not even having the courtesy to consult beforehand with its local bishop about doing so — was entirely unfounded.

Scratch Fordham University from the list, as well.

There are probably some more colleges in the Fordham mold who seem to be under the pro-life radar. Obama seems the reason why Notre Dame hit the headlines. However, ‘no one told him’ seems pretty lame.

What exactly is the purpose of someone who denies the teachings of the Catholic faith claiming a degree from a Catholic university, honorary or whatever? What does it mean to them?

Wife graduated from CINO Marymount College in NY.
The aging lesbian earth-worshipping Mercy sisters could not keep the school afloat, and CINO Fordham University took it over. The aging “gay” self-worshipping Jesuits could not keep it afloat, and it is now totally defunct.

The souls of more kids were harmed by those schools in the last 40 years than were helped, I am sure.

Archbishop Dolan will not be happy at all. I expect action on this one!

It’s just like the radical homos who won’t stop screaming and prancing their outrage until every last person on the earth declares the GLBT “lifestyle” to be virtuous: these “honorees” (and those who bestow the “honors”) enjoy the thrill of thumbing their noses at the Church by collecively declaring evil acts to be good.

This is much like the divorced man who remaries and expects the rest of the world to pretend that everything is hunky-dory and to play along with the facade, despite the fact that he broke his vow to remain with his first wife until death. The rest of us are somehow unfair SOBs if we question such a man’s integrity.

It seems to be purely political.
Catholic universities represent a certain type of legitimacy, authority, and consensus.
If a pro-abortion politician can get the faculty and administration of such a
university to give him (or her) an honorary doctoral degree, it becomes easier
to show up at election time demanding the Catholic vote.

Likewise, if the university is seen granting such degrees to popular politicians,
it appears more relevant, secular, and open-minded.

But you still have to wonder what does it really mean to the politician who rejects Catholic teachings.

Re +Egan’s confidence in Fordham being dashed because of a degree for Bloomberg, it seems the Cardinal was selective about what made him indignant:

It never seems to end... Then we have Jenkins giving a lecture about dialogue - meanwhile just outside his door or thereabouts...

I think the message of the day was this – that the President of Notre Dame said that they had invited the President of the United States and decided to honor him for the sake of dialogue.

And then the President got up and said that the differences that we have on abortion – namely the Catholic Church’s staunch opposition to abortion and his staunch support of abortion were “irreconcilable.”

And at that moment, it would seem to me that the dialogue came to a screeching halt. Father Jenkins’ expressed desire for dialogue, whether it was well-founded or justified, at that point got thrown back in his face.

The President shut the door on dialogue by saying that there was not going to be any change in his position on abortion and he understood that there was not going to be any change in the Church’s position on abortion. To me, that was the lesson of the day. I am glad that Mr. Obama was so clear.

And then, amazingly, everybody gave him a standing ovation. The perception unfortunately was that this was a completely acceptable position of his and, because he is a bright and talented man, this trumps the destructive decisions that he’s making day after day.

An excellent interview with Bishop Finn.

Marymount School of New York (for girls, private, outrageously expensive nursery through high school) recently sent out a glossy mailing to everyone, including families with young children, showing two alumnae getting "married."

There must have been quite a stinkeroo over that, because the next issue's lead story was about Bias Awareness Week. We're always the baddies and they are the Sisters of Perpetual Virtue.

A long time ago at a club president’s dinner, one of my friends, the president of the Pro Life club, confronted the then college president about abortion activism on campus. I still remember the vitriol directed at him by Fordham’s president. Literally, if that Jesuit could shoot flames from his mouth, he would have.

Just food for thought..... it hasn’t been a Catholic institution for a long time, but rather, an institution in the “Catholic Tradition” or some such.

It’s because of all the federal funding the institution receives; they don’t have a choice really, or so they say.

You take the king’s shilling and all that.

All the conservatives who graduated from there, if there are any, should stop giving money to those types of schools. Then we will see how long they stay open.
