Looks to be a desolate high desert/mountain region. Only tiny villages here and there on a Mapquest map.

Location is just north of where Russia, Kazakhstan, China, and Mongolia come together.

This one was much more shallow than the Japanese quake, so the potential for damage is much higher even though it was far weaker.

I noticed that, however, I remember that there was some uncertainty about the depth of the 8.0 in Japan.
