PMSNBC just reported it. Says they are being told by the Canadian Prime Minister's office that "a lightning strike at a Niagra power plant caused the chain reaction outage".

I don't know if it is true this time, or not, but the 1977 blackout was EXACTLY precipitated by a lighting strike on agiant transmission line and junction.

That makes sense. It explains the cross country outage. The power probably travels in both directions from Niagra Falls.
