Rather Calls ACLU a "Civil Rights Group"

• With the fighting in Iraq all but over, domestic politics have reemerged after being largely dormant for months. Unfortunately, Dan Rather's liberal bias on domestic issues has reemerged as well. Protecting the nation's airports was back in the news again this week following an ACLU lawsuit on behalf of two opponents of the war who claim they were unjustly stopped from boarding airplanes on account of their political views. But reporting on the brouhaha, the CBS anchor didn't see fit to label the group many conservatives consider anything but innocuous. Instead, it was a "civil rights group."

  Rather's version: "Civil rights groups are suing the F.B.I. over a so-called 'no-fly list,' a watch list meant to keep terrorists off commercial flights. A lot of law-abiding U.S. citizens say they're showing up on that list for no good reason. CBS's Richard Schlesinger has a case in point for tonight's Eye on America."

• Dan Rather jumped into the fray Tuesday over comments senator Rick Santorum allegedly made about homosexuality. But in a tell-piece in which he relayed the Pennsylvania Republican's complaints about being quoted out of context, Rather decided to stitch two sentences together (without acknowledging it) and read a quote that sounded much more wide-ranging than anything Santorum actually said.
• Also not mentioned by Rather: Lara Jakes Jordan, the AP correspondent who first reported the remarks, is married to Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's campaign manager, Jim Jordan.

Santorum did nothing wrong, except agreeing to talk to the AP correspondent. She probably asked him, "So, how evil do you think those homosexuals are?" Or "Don't you think it's good to be extreme and right-wing?"

My answer would have been a resounding " YES!

I always though ACLU stood for "American Center for Leftist Umbrage".

Just because the term "civil rights" has recently taken on a racial connotation, we don't need to refute the obvious. The ACLU is a civil rights group. I don't see the big deal here...

I don't think everything the ACLU does is bad, though I do wish they'd put a little more care into what cases they decide to pursue.

Well, I think the ACLU is mis-guided, but I think they are a civil rights group.

However, I think the Bill of Rights establishes the key civil rights in this country. Has the ACLU done much to preserve our Right to Keep and Bear Arms? If not, why not?

ACLU is indeed a 'civil rights' group, which is dramatically less honorable than a 'civil liberties' group would be

the fact that the ACLU sacrificed its reputation as the latter for the mantle of the former should be a source of shame to them and i don't mind Rather inadvertently pointing it out

I agree that the ACLU is not a civil liberties group, but a civil rights group, and should rename itself the American Civil Rights Union (ACRU). Civil liberties involve a protection of the people from intrusions by government. As an example, The ACLU should side with, not against, the Boy Scouts, as the right of association is a civil liberty. Likewise, the ACLU should support Augusta National in staying all male, if it decides to do so. But the ACLU has become a liberal/left political organization instead.

Hmmm. Sounds like no one knows what the number of people on the list might be. I found this article interesting especially since they refer to a list from the 1990's. no fly
