[history]
We're only four months into 2003 and it already is heading into the history books as the year of the protester.
Given the Iraqi war is all but ended, a demonstration planned for Saturday evening outside the White House Correspondents Association dinner will protest "liberal bias" in journalism

Congratulations to kristinn and Angelwood and all the other stalwart and excellent human beings in the D.C. Chapter of FreeRepublic. I wish I could be there with you for this Freep. I'll be in touch as soon as I know my next schedule for a foray to D.C., to see what targets of opportunity will be available then.
Cordially and with Great Respect,

Asked to give a toast before the prestigious New York Press Club in 1953, John Swinton, the former Chief of Staff at the New York Times, made this candid confession [it's worth noting that Swinton was called "The Dean of His Profession" by other newsmen, who admired him greatly]:
" There is no such thing, at this date of the world's history, as an independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job.
"If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone. The business of the journalist is to destroy the truth; to lie outright; to pervert; to vilify; to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell the country for his daily bread. You know it and I know it and what folly is this toasting an independent press. We are the tools and vassals of the rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes. "

Thanks for the kind words. The DC Chapter is getting ready for the unveiling of the Garofalo Awards and another fun freep of the members of the press -- the ones that distort the facts and spin like tops.

Mr. Light told the magazine that of the 59 shows in the band's upcoming U.S. tour, only six have scattered seats remaining. In fact, in the first two days tickets went on sale, $49 million worth were sold.
Mr. Light (and the WashTimes) failed to note that the Blixie Chix tickets went on sale several weeks BEFORE Fatalie Mains made her statement. Thus the concerts were for the most part sold out before the lead idiot made her pathetic statement.

Mrs. Carlson said the Bush tactic not only reminded people of what they "hated" in Mr. Clinton, "it tied Gore up in knots: he was angrier at Clinton over the whole Monica business than Hillary was." I am listening to Rush talk about Santorum and just laughed aloud at seeing this bit of drivel. It would have been easier for Gore to distance himself if he hadn't called the "Rapist in Chief" America's greatest president.

So A). "there has been no effect" on Dixie Chicks album sales.
And B). the album "tumbled" down the charts after Maines made her asinine comments about Bush.
Sounds like some spin is going on here.
BTW, the whole tour nearly sold out the day tix went on sale. Oddly, they became available for every show the same day, setting a record. But that was BEFORE the flap.
And now there are seats still left?
Not looking good for them.

Sounds like some spin is going on here.kAcknor Sez:
In two: "World Class".
1. In fact, in the first two days tickets went on sale, $49 million worth were sold.
Tickets went on sale before Fat Chick opened her pie hole.
2. Dixie Chicks are "flying high," despite a degree of backlash
Dixie Chicks' latest album, "Home," tumbled down the music charts... Actually, sales are off near 50%!
Naw, no spin here.... ;)

What a crock. The Dixie Chicks' tickets were PRESOLD BEFORE the Bush comments.

Maybe there also needs to be a Voinivich Award for the Scummist RINO who would rather keep higher taxes then reduce government waste and Corporate Welfare:
In the early morning hours of April 11, the House narrowly approved a conference report on a budget resolution (H Con Res 95) sanctioning $550 billion in tax cuts over ten years. Seven Republicans joined their Democratic counterparts in opposing the measure, which passed by a 216 to 211 margin. The original House version of the resolution, approved in late March, provided for a tax cut of $726 billion the sum President Bush requested.
The reluctance of moderate Republicans to support a massive tax cut helped slash the Presidents proposal by more than half in the Senate, which also approved its version of the budget resolution at the end of March. In that narrowly divided body, Senators Olympia Snowe (R- ME) and George Voinivich (R-OH), insisted that a wartime tax cut not exceed $350 billion, while Senators Lincoln Chafee (R-RI) and John McCain (R-AZ) joined most Democrats in opposing any tax cuts at all.
Not wanting to give up on a higher figure, GOP leaders devised an unusual conference report on the budget resolution allowing the House and Senate tax writers to draft legislation providing for cuts of different amounts. This tactic criticized by Democrats and anti-poverty advocates as a sleight of hand was designed to delay a final vote on the size of the cuts until May when the House Ways and Means Committee and Senate Finance Committee produce tax legislation. Procedural rules requiring 60 votes to pass legislation will ensure that the Senates version of the tax bill does not cost more than $350 billion. However, when the tax bill returns from conference committee with the House, it can be as high as $550 billion and will not be protected by the 60-vote rule which means a tax cut of that size can pass in the Senate with just 51 votes.
