Paris Not Willing to Buy U.S. Wrath With Its Veto

While efforts continue to break the deadlock in the United Nation Security Council over a draft resolution which could authorize military operation against Iraq, Paris has done its best to solve the Iraqi crisis in order to avoid another war in the region.

During the Security Council preliminary session attended by foreign ministers on March 7, the French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin tried harder than all other countries' foreign ministers at the meeting for a peaceful solution to the Iraqi crisis. While, the Russian, Chinese, and German foreign ministers didn't play the role they were expected of with respect to the crisis.

At a press conference, the French foreign minister expressed his opposition to the 10-day ultimatum to Iraq to disarm. Meanwhile, the U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell is against the French proposal regarding the Security Council member countries' decision on the draft resolution suggested by the U.S. -- the UN arms inspectors' report indicates that the Iraqi disarmament would take at least four months. So, it doesn't seem that the French proposal will be accepted by the warmongers' camp.

Seemingly, France, as the last obstacle in the Security Council would not be able to alter U.S. diplomacy. Ever since its fifth president, General de Gaulle, France has always been worried about its prestige on the international scene. Since then, it has always tried to pursue an independent foreign policy. France has also sought an equal role to that of the U.S. in international developments.

France, on one hand, being well aware of imperial U.S. policies, and on the other hand, not being able to change U.S. policies -- in order to maintain its international prestige and keep its Arab friends -- follows a minimalist diplomacy. It is through such minimalist diplomacy that France is trying to make the U.S. actions conditional to the UN resolutions.

French officials have, time and again, said that if pre-emptive attacks become international norm, then we can expect repeated and immediate violations of the weak countries' sovereignty on some pretext or some perceived threat.

Nevertheless, it seems that the French diplomacy in the Iraqi crisis has reached its end. In final analysis, following conservative neo-Gaullists' advice, Paris is not willing to bring American wrath on itself by using its veto power.

I still think in the last minute France will say it's okay to attack Iraq.

If France now supports the US, but the US won't attack Iraq, the Iraq's will punish the French (take away the oil and trade).

If the French oppose the US, and the US won't attack Iraq, Saddam will reward the French. (That is very unlikely, because Saddam will be toast soon)

If the US attacks the US, while the French opposed the US with the veto, the new Iraqi government will punish the French. And the US will do so too.

But if France play their game, and at the last moment (a few hours before the attacks) give the US a go-ahead, they won't be the big losers.

Regardless of what Frogland does, they have lost any respect of the United States for the next 100 years. Lets hope that at some time in the future they generate sensible leadership - but don't bet on it.
