Cornell conservatives jeer Carville as convocation choice

ITHACA -- Campus conservatives say the recent announcement that James Carville will serve as Cornell University's 2003 convocation speaker is further evidence of a left-wing bias at the school.

But the students who selected him stand by their choice.

The selection of Democratic political strategist Carville, best known for running Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign, to speak at the convocation ceremony follows actor and activist Danny Glover in 2002, former attorney general Janet Reno in 2001 and Democratic U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer in 2000.

Jennifer Davis, assistant dean of students, has served as the selection committee's advisor for three years. She said the political bent of the speakers is probably not a coincidence, because Democrats dominate Cornell's Student Assembly.

Ithaca is the City of Evil.

"There is a silent majority at Cornell who oppose the biased education we all receive."

Then stop being silent and let your voices be heard.

Will Gryc agreed. "I think he's entertaining," he said.

In my opinion, he is the lowest species of vermin on the face of the earth. How anyone can stand to get near him or have anything to do with him is something I will never, ever understand.

I graduated from Cornell in 1984, and grew up in Trumansburg
(near Ithaca..) Your feedback and opinions are most accurate. I will be having dinner this Thursday with President Rhodes (served as Pres. of Cornell over 10 years!) and will print this out for him to be amused by!
Since space is limited, and this is my first post EVER to this web site, I will spare you my stories of being at the
BIG RED in the late 70's and early 80's. For another time prehaps...

While I certainly sympathize about the obvious bias and discrimination that conservative students get at this institution of "higher education" (I live in Madison, WI, believe me, I know.), I have to ask in all sincerity, why are you still going to Cornell? Good school or no, there are plenty of other good schools that are not as blatantly biased. If the school is actively hostile to your most deeply held convictions, why stay? Is it really worth it?

Carville is almost neanderthal like and his classless uneducated style of speaking is an insult to Cornell. Hopefully he will get booed in the stadium, but I doubt it.

Harasim said the class council does not have a political agenda.

And the sad part is – they probably really believe this about themselves!

Ag School Class of 86.

Even back during the Reagan years, Cornell was a hotbed of liberalism. But it was republican paradise compared to these days.

Anyone remember the 1986 Libya bombing...the usual suspects were going to have a protest rally. But the Cornell Review, College Republicans, and some of the fraternities got together and had a PRO-WAR rally at the same time, which dwarfed the libs' event.

Ah, those were the days...

This is what's pathetic. They can't find Iraq on a map, but they can sure find the WH.

I go back to Cornell's Class of '58, where I met my wife. Even then liberalism had taken over the government department; and, of course, since Vietnam, that damned political and social philosophy has metastasized.
