The Mitchells also got involved in "patriot" groups opposed to paying income taxes, and later became followers of survivalist guru Bo Gritz, according to Corbett. "Then all of a sudden they decided to buy a fifth-wheel trailer and they went up to Idaho where this Bo Gritz was."

Idaho, eh? There was an early report of Ricci being seen in Idaho, though I don't think it was ever verified.

I am so interested to know what the details are on this.

I'm just a couple of hours north of SLC in Idaho and my husbands claims he has seen this idiot before. He even commented that day that the cops needed to "take care" of this guy and get him off of the streets.

Now I'm beginning to wonder what religion Mitchell espoused.

Derrick Thompson said his stepfather told him he had taken "10 hits of LSD and talked to God out in the desert" several years ago. "They said they weren't on drugs, but we think that was a lie. We think that's how he could communicate with God. That and listen to the Steve Miller Band."

ohhh deranged one.... show us the way.....

LOL! I was going to say that he sounds like the typical Libertine that you encounter frequently here on FR!

I think I read that Mrs. Smart came upon him when he was either begging or panhandling. In any event, she felt sorry for him and wanted to help by offering him work. In short, her inability to distrust and her do-gooderism compromised the safety of her family. I don't trust anybody, especially the indigent. They usually have social or mental problems that make them indigents. I'm sure she feels the same as I do now.

Some sort of tricked out, whacked out version of LDS that was far out of line with the main channel of their theology, I think.

The Mitchells met at a group therapy session, according to Wanda's mother, Dora Corbett.

Mistake #1.

Yeah - you wanna do a good deed, buy them a sandwich and pay their bus fare to a shelter. Otherwise, don't bring them to your home.

Its elementary prudence, and Mrs. Smart blew it.

No, no - the best chicks are always to be found in rehab.

At least you know you already have something in common with them from the start.

Oh, you're missing the subtext; people are DESPERATELY hoping this Mitchell guy became a Muslim or something.

Even more so now that he's being linked with whacko anti-tax groups and Bo Gritz....

This will end up with the perp being a far-right-wing fanatic, conservative, gun-lover, homophobe, religious zealot, war-mongerer, Bushbot, militiaman, survivalist, Republican white male who freeped. Wait and see.

Yeah, its pretty easy. Guys who run around with the word "patriot" on their lips when loudly describing themselves to the world at large are the ones most likely to be running guns, evading taxes, and/or manufacturing crank.

They're not afforded respect by the general populace because they've not earned it.
