Ambulances Used For Terror Activities

On March 10 2003, a hearing was held in the military court in Bet El regarding the indictment of Aslam Jabril, a 'Red Crescent' ambulance driver, who is charged with using ambulances to transport weapons to terrorist activists of the Al Assa Martyrs' Brigades in Nablus and Ramallah.

Among the weapons that the accused transported were guns and explosive belts which were intended for use in planned terror attacks. In order to disguise the contents of the ambulance, Jabril also transported a doctor and his brother's wife and children, and drove to a checkpoint outside Ramallah where IDF forces stopped him.

The accused pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him and was sentenced with up to four and a half years in prison and a suspended sentence.

A black bag containing a gun

(According to section 2-1 in the indictment) The accused was working as an ambulance driver for the Palestinian 'Red Crescent' at the end of August 2001 when he conducted a number of telephone conversations with Nadal Zahar also known as "Abu-Antar," a senior terrorist in the "Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade", the military wing of the of the Fatah-Tanzim. Abu-Antar asked the accused to transport "material" to Nablus and Ramallah. The accused immediately understood that the "material" in question was weapons designated for terrorist attacks.

After a short time, Abu-Antar visited the home of the accused in Balata and asked if he was prepared to transport guns to Ramallah. The accused agreed and a few weeks latter, Abu-Antar brought over a black sack filled with guns in the middle of the night. The accused was instructed to pass the gun on to Mahmmud Yosef Adris Al Surqan, head of "Sheik Ziad" hospital in Ramallah and a resident of Al Birah.

The accused was then requested by Adris to transport a letter and a large package which contained the dates and details of terror attacks executed by activists of the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade.

Inside one of the envelopes was the phrase "send grass for the lamb." The accused testified that he immediately understood that this was a code from Adris requesting weapons or ammunition from Abu-Antar.

On March 26, 2002, the accused spoke to Abu-Antar on the phone and agreed to use his ambulance to transport an explosive belt to Ramallah. Abu-Antar arrived at the home of the accused in Balata with Muhammud Titi, another terrorist in the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade and another man who waited with a car. The accused said he did not work during the evening and Abu-Antar offered to pay him for his services.

During the night, the accused hid a package containing an explosive belt under the stairs in his living room. In the early hours of the morning, the accused opened the package and discovered that it was a bomb attached to ten plastic bottles. In order to safely transfer the explosive belt, he called his manager and requested to transport his allegedly sick sister- in-law and her son from Nablus to the hospital in Ramallah. The accused promised the manager that he would reimburse any expenses when he returned from Ramallah.

The accused placed the explosive belt under the stretcher in the ambulance and a battery on the ambulance monitor. Afterwards he picked up Dr. Assan, a dentist who had requested to accompany the accused on his trip to Ramallah. The accused also picked up his sister-in-law and her children. Together they drove towards Ramallah in the ambulance. The accused succeeded in crossing the Harrah checkpoint but was stopped at the military checkpoint next to the Rama Bridge when the explosive belt was discovered by IDF soldiers. The belt was detonated by the IDF forces.

Indictment Served Against Terrorist Responsible for the Deaths of Three Israelis

On August 13, 2002, an indictment was served against Tanzim terrorist, Samar Mahmmad Hasin Abu Qawik. Abu-Qawik carried out the double attack on the "Wadi Harmiah" highway, north of Ramallah, in which two IDF soldiers and an Israeli civilian were killed. During the attack, Abu-Qawik wounded an additional six soldiers and civilians.

Abu-Qawik also carried out a shooting attack on Jerusalem's French Hill, seriously wounding an Israeli resident.

On March 9, 2003, Abu-Qawik was found guilty of three counts of pre-meditated murder, two counts of attempted pre-meditated murder, and involvement in illicit activity.

It should be noted that Abu- Qawik has confessed to the above-mentioned counts.

The Terrorist Attack on the Wadi Harmiah Highway

On November 12, 2000, Abu- Qawik and his acquaintance, Mahmmud Abrash, a member of the Tanzim-Fatah terrorist group, met with Mahand Abu-Halawah, also a member of Tanzim-Fatah.

During the meeting, Abu- Qawik and Mahmmud Abrash received instructions to carry out shooting attacks against Israeli vehicles. The two agreed and scheduled an additional meeting with Mahand Abu- Halawah for November 13, 2000.

On November 13, 2000, at approximately 8:30am, Abu- Qawik and Mahmmud Abrash met Mahand Abu- Halawah, who took them to the Beituna industrial zone, where they were joined by Ahmed Andur, a Tanzim terrorist.

The terrorists, Including Abu- Qawik, traveled together to the Palestinian village of Sinjil to obtain a weapon and discuss ways of carrying out a terrorist attack. However, on the way to Sinjil, the terrorists were involved in a car accident which delayed their arrival by several hours.

Weapons Obtained from Palestinian Policeman

After arriving in Sinjil, the terrorists went to the house of Halad Rahman Abrahim Shabanah, a policeman in the Palestinian Authority's "Force 17" unit, who provided them with the Kalashnikov rifle used in the shooting attack.

The terrorists left Sinjil, stopped by the town's exit road, (located near Highway 60), and waited for an Israeli car to pass. Ahmed Andur sat to the right of the driver, while Abu- Qawik held the Kalashnikov rifle, and Abu- Halawah and Mahmmud Abrash sat in the back seat of the car.

Five minutes later, a "Peugeot 405" bearing Israeli license plates drove along Highway 60. Inside the Peugeot were Avi Sharal and Sarah Lishi.

After identifying the occupants of the car as Jews, the terrorists tailed the Peugeot until the "British Police" Junction (Ein al-Harmiah).

At approximately 4:00pm, the terrorists' vehicle pulled up to the left side of the Peugeot. Ahmed Andur then leaned out the window, and fired 8 bullets, wounding Sarah Lishi and Avi Sharal.

Two IDF Soldiers Killed and Six IDF Soldiers Seriously Wounded

Immediately after ambushing the Peugeot, Abu- Qawik pulled along the left side of an Israeli bus carrying IDF soldiers. 18 shots were fired at the bus, killing Corporal Elad Valenstein and Corporal Amit Zahnah, and seriously wounding an additional six IDF soldiers.

Abu-Kahvik and the Jerusalem French Hill Attack

On February 22, 2001, at 12:00am, Mahmmud Abrash suggested to Abu- Qawik that he carry out a shooting attack in Jerusalem using a Kalashnikov rifle. Abu-Kahvik agreed.

Abu- Qawik and Mahmmud Abrash then traveled to Jerusalem in a stolen car bearing Israeli license plates. Abu- Qawik drove, while Mahmmud Abrash sat beside him holding the Kalashnikov with a full clip.

Abu- Qawik drove the stolen car to the French Hill Junction in Jerusalem. At approximately 3:15am, a "Fiat Uno" bearing Israeli license plates, pulled up and stopped at the junction. Abu- Qawik pulled up alongside the "Fiat Uno," to determine if the driver, Roni Netanel, was Jewish.

To do so, Mahmmud Abrash asked Roni Netanel directions (in Hebrew) to Jerusalem's Old City. When Roni Netanel answered in Hebew, Mahmmud Abrash brought the Kalashnikov into position and fired 15 bullets at Roni Netanel, seriously wounding him.

After the terrorist attack, Abu- Qawik drove to Ramallah.
