Gertz, although a good reporter, does seem to over dramatize his news at times. He might be right this time but I have started to not be overexcited about his "breaking news"

This just underscores the need to get our military in there and get the job done. Enough fussing with the diplomacy. Especially since France guarantees the veto. Why would they want to destroy their perfect record of appeasement?

This was expected, in fact, I believe these scenarios were raised last fall around the time of the first resolution. The Saudi fields in particular....

They'll (Al Queda) will have limited success in this endeavor but at a great cost to them. The only reason they would have any success is due to the large area that must be protected. The pipelines are the most vulnerable and unprotected. The refineries will be tough. The oil fields could get hit but only a few well heads at a time... before they get too far they would be dead.

OK, Call me dumb, but couldn't we simply drop a big, asbestos dome over a flaming well and seal off all the O2 from the fire? Or, perhaps hit it with a Daisycutter that would suck all the air from it?

Beware of joggers in the oilfields trying to light their shoes on fire.

Really, this is pretty stupid. It's not that easy to destroy an oilfield, and it wouldn't be hard seeing someone trying to do so.

Mining a field with explosive is fairly easy if you control the fields, like Saddam did in Kuwait. But they are probably the least vulnerable part of the whole oil to your gas tank equation.

This is a real ugly thing. My dad worked for ARAMCO from '54-84. Started out as the start-up foreman for the Abqaiq LPG plant, retired as a senior VP.

During the early 80s, when I was a little airborne snuffie, I puffed up and said "We'll jump in and take the oil. We're Airborne."

He said something to the effect of "Son, we've got 20,000 employees. 2,000 of them know enough to shut us down with nothing more than a pickup truck and a lighter. The rest could figure it out if they were motivated."

Petrochem plants are big, require lots of folks, and are inherently dangerous. Someone with just a little smarts, and who is willing to die, can do a lot of damage.
