Amish men, hoping to keep horses on their land, resort to rare political activism

NITTANY, PA. (AP) -- In a rare act of political activism, two Amish men organized a petition drive to change a zoning ordinance so each could keep a horse on his property.

Daniel Lee King and Daniel Beiler, with the help of others in their religious sect, collected about 185 signatures by going door-to-door in Walker Township. Attorney James M. Bryant filed the petition Wednesday.

I think Amish are some of the most honest, gentle, and warm-hearted people in the entire world.

The local paper, the Centre Daily Times, had a front page story on this earlier this year with an above the fold photo of one of properties. The house and property appeared to be neat and well maintained. And trust me, Walker Township is a rural area, despite being less than 20 miles from Penn State University.

I'm rooting for the Amish in this one.

Let another frind of mine tell you about his Amish co-worker that was caught humping the family dog (it was a female at least!) 6 months after he got married. His wife caught him. This happened in the last 3 or 4 months. I could go on but PURE? No way!

I am not Amish, but have heard about one of their rites of passage, where the teenagers are turned loose, out into the world, with or without family support. They are allowed to run wild for a period of time, do anything they want, experiment with everything. The reasoning behind this, is so that the young people will decide whether or not they want to live in Satan's world... or within the safe religious enclave.

I grew up in a church only one step removed from the Amish. My dad grew up Amish. I have many Amish rlatives. Almost all of my friends I grew up with have Amish connections. Google search for "Adin Yutzy" School. He was from my church and lived 3 miles from my home in Missouri. There is no one here more directly familiar with the Amish than I (at least to my knowledge)

Now that I have established my credentials let me assure you of one thing. The Amish do not believe in or experience the New Birth. To teach it will have you expelled. A few groups do but they are the exception. Their claim to salvation is their lifestyle and their heritage.

The garbage is not only in the youth. One of my wife's childhood neighbors and his wife were into wife swapping. One of my friends grew up Amish and the normal custom was the newlyweds would go around and wife swap with family members (Uncles etc.) to learn the ropes of sex. He was asked many times why he and his wife refused. If you think they are pure and holy you don't know them well. A few are but they are the exception.

The Amish are not bothering anyone. Leave them alone, let them have their horses. The nosy liberals should be happy the Amish use horses to get around instead of driving SUV's. However, horse flatulence does create some nasty gases.

Oh, I wouldn't be prepared to say that any group is pure or holy. I leave that judgement to the Lord, on an individual basis, he studies and knows the hearts of those who have chosen Christ as their savior. I already stated that I am not Amish, and I am not prepared to critique them. Your insight is interesting, though. I thought the word for this rite of passage is close to brunspringa... I am not Pennsylvania Dutch, either, and cannot spell any German word correctly (... now Spanish... that's a different story!). Ha! Wishing you well.

From the posts on this page, one would think that it was a demorate form, Such Hate!!!! Anyway, everywhere i've ever lived you cannot chage the zone of land and outlaw the useage that was there before the zone change. In law,it is called the grandfather clause.

While I would not go as far as to say "very few" the problem is HUGE. Worse in my opinion than the Catholic priests homo abuse. And they almost never report it. I have an Amish Mennonite (yes there are groups that call themselves that) bishop quaking in ear because I am anonymously threatening to turn him in. I found the info out. At this point I am just playing with him. Thought about blackmail but that is illegal.
