Anarchist kooks in my campus (Washington U., STL, MO)
Febraury 27, 2003 | Yours truly

I was walking from the student center after having lunch to the School of Engineering computer center www.cec.wust.edu (I'm a Civil Eng. major) and found these masterpieces on the woodboard surrounding the library construction site:

REFUSE-RESIST-REVOLT

AMERICA: THE NAZI BABYLON

HUNT THE RICH (uncanny, since the schoolyear tuition here is almost $30k)

QUESTION CIVILIZATION (does this doofus want us to go bakc to the Stone Age???)

RICH MAN'S WAR

Well, you've seen it by yourselves.

Wash U engineering? I'm an alum. Not of the engineering school, but..

Remember, please, a couple things about that institution.

1. That library was built originally without the weight of the books factored in and after a year, had to be emptied and jacked back up to fix the foundation.

2. Tuition is $30k and the endowment is second in the country only to Harvard.

This is not a place run by sane people and I've lived seven blocks from the place most of my life.

At least the students aren't burning buildings down like they did during Vietnam.

I'm taking a class (in Swedish) at Wash U on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, so I'll be there tonight. Yes, I've noticed the leftist graffiti, too. But I thought I saw one the other night that had one of the words painted over, so as to give it a completely opposite message. I'll look for that one tonight.

Last week before class a young lady (nice kid, but a young skull full of mush) showed me a book she was reading. It was Michael Moore's Stupid White Men. The instructor, a female graduate assistant from Sweden, was familiar with the book in what seemed to be an approving sort of way. I grumbled a bit and said something about my having a very low opinion of Michael Moore, that he's an extreme liberal and I'm a conservative.

By the way, El, you left out the "l" in the "wustl" web address you gave for the Engineering School. It's:

http://www.cec.wustl.edu.

Well, I just got back from my Swedish class at Wash U, and I saw most of the graffiti you mention in your post:

HUNT THE RICH
RICH MAN'S WAR

These are "rich," considering the incomes of the students' parents.

QUESTION CIVILIZATION
That is exactly the problem of terrorism, and why it threatens all civilized societies. The stupid European nations, and the Euro-wannabes here, should see that terrorism poses a threat to every legitimate government.

AMERICA: THE NAZI BABYLON
This one I found to be the most ironic, since Iraq is THE Babylon Babylon.

However, I also saw a pro-American piece of graffiti:
SUPPORT OUT TROOPS.
SUPPORT OUR COUNTRY.

But then someone had written next to it:
SUPPORT OUR IDEALS.
REJECT PREEMPTIVE WAR.

Someone else had the last laugh, though. The word "REJECT" was painted over, so that now it reads, simply:
PREEMPTIVE WAR

If you see one with a pretty round face and longish light brown hair that answers to the name Christen tell her that Terri said to knock it off. Geez, you just can't get thru to some kids....

I was in ROTC at Wash U. when they burned down the building. Don't let this current crop of infants play with matches.
